    The unit would not switch off either (slider switch at top) so I let the battery run down until the display turned off. Then I re-powered from the car and it is now working properly again. I have found the reset. I will use the unit tomorrow and see if the problem re-occurs and if so try a reset.

    It is 10 pm here in Australia, a bit late to do much testing.

    Thank You

Try resetting the Garmin and restarting map update again.

To reset the garmin use the reset button located at the bottom of the unit;

Garmin froze with a "Map Update Notice" the screen

The unit isn't frozen. If you tap the power button you will hear it beep and change screens. What has happened is your touchscreen has failed. This is a common problem. Your touchscreen needs replaced. If you want some troubleshooting info, please see this link. There is just too much info to retype here:

Garmin Nuvi will not respond, to touch of screen and screen indicates that map needs to be updated. What do I do to get it to function again

You need to plug in your Nuvi into your computer, once connected go to www.MyGarmin.com

It will then seek your Nuvi model and ask if you like to update maps or update firmware.

I would update firmware first.

Love my Nuvi 760

Touchscreen not responding.

There are three levels of fixes, please try them in order:
1. Reset the GPS using the Reset button, on the back, just under the Antenna Hinge. Resetting will turn off the GPS, and then turn it back on, if connected to power. Test, if fixed, great, otherwise, go to fix 2.
2. Turn the power off, then press and hold the powerbutton for up to 2 minutes. The GPS will turn on, and display a "PreBoot Mode" message. When that message disappears, and the screen calibration screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions, and you are fixed. If you still cannot use the touch screen, repeat fixes 1 and 2 several times, just to be sure., then go to fix 3
3. The touch-screen glass has probably broken or lost its connection with the GPX motherboard. You can order new touch screen glass on the web and install yourself, if you are techy in nature, otherwise do a search for "garmin nuvi 660 repair" and choose your service.
