Not an ideal situation but a 20pin PSU will run a 24 pi MoBo providing it is capable of suppling the correct amount of power.

The 24 pin socket is designed to accept a 20 pin plug in the correct place only use firm pressure to locate the locking clip but do not force it. You will have 4 spare pins on one end or the other.

I presume that is a pentium 4 or newer motherboard. you will need a power supply that has at least one or two of the small four pin connectors as well... generally if it has that the extra four pins slides onto the 20 pin connector on one side and that makes up your 24 pin connection.

Power supply for a gateway GT5634H

Hi Debbie ,

Yes that power connector should be just fine the extra 4pins are an addition 12v rail to reduce the amperage on one line , you can just connect it offset to one side, not centred.
allthough there will be more current than the newer 24pin PSU, id reccomend buying an additional 20 to 24pin adaptor from

https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-6in-Motherboard-Power-Adapter/dp/B0002GRQRW

hope this helps .

How many power supply connections to the motherboard hp pavilion a 220n

Check your mainboard for power connectors.

The main one is a 20Pin some-times 24pin.
The next area to check is a 4Pin CPU power connector, which is loacted around the CPU socket. Top left of the board.

I have got a system with an Aopen motherboard which having only a 20 pin connector for smps connectivity. the Atx smps i have is is 24 pinned. i can connect the main line by splitting up the 24pin...

The actual Processor fan connects to the CPU Fan header on the mainboard. It's 4 small pins. It plugs in right near the CPU socket on the mainboard. Check the user manual for exact placement, you may download it from the AOpen website if you don't have one already.

Plug in the 20Pin connector if that is the most Pins that the mainboard will allow. Cable tie the other 4Pins back onto the 20Pin connector.

Then if there is additional 4Pin connector required by the mainboard for CPU power and you don't have that connector on you power supply, you will need to purchase a Molex to 4Pin CPU power connector. When you go to the computer store check with them that all is correctly connected.

Take care!

I have an Acer M5100 desktop pc. AMD Phenom quad-core 2.2Ghz, 3 Gb of DDR2 ram, Nvidia 8800GT 512 MB video card. I properly shut down my pc last night, when I woke up it would not turn on. Nothing happens...

You have done all the correct things. If you just power uo the switch mode power supply without any load it may not turn on properly. Just connect a few devices such as the hard disk, floppy, DVD/CD drives and external fan to the power supply don't connect the data cables to the drives and power up the power supply by using a paper clip across the green and black connector (this switches the power supply on like pressing the power switch on the front panel). Then use a multi-meter and measure the voltage on a 4 wire power connector - 12Volts on the yellow and black, 5volts on the red and black wires.
If you don't get the correct voltage on these wires then the switch mode power supply is faulty.
You can test the other voltages on the 20pin and 24pin connector that a\connects on the motherboard.

Check out this WEB site for the voltages of each pin on the 20 and 24 pin connector.
http://pinouts.ru/Power/atx_v2_pinout.shtml
NOTE - If you have a 20 pin connector then ignore pins 21 to 24 on the diagram. Pins 1 to 20 are common on both 20 and 24 pin connectors on the older and newer switch mode power supplies.

I have unpluged the 20 pin ATX Power Connector on the PTGD-LA motherboard, there is a 24 pin plug, I am not sure where to plug it in. I can only find manuals for the PTGD1-LA which shows a 24pin/24plug.

If the motherboard has a 24-pin socket, you need a 24-pin connector on your power-supply.
If the motherboard has a 20-pin socket, then only 20-pins from the connector need to be connected to the motherboard.

Model D3057F3H Want to use it to power a car radio. What is the on / off connection and what is the 12V out let than can handle 5amp

Check the label on the power supply for the current rating on 12 volts.
The +12 volt is the yellow colored wire and the black is the ground.
To turn on the switch mode power supply connect pin 14 (for a 20pin connector) or pin 18 (for a 24pin connector) to ground.
You can use a switch so you can turn the power supply ON and OFF.

Hello there, I got Asus PC-DL Deluxe UAYZ motherboard and would like to connect to ATX 300W 20 pin power supply. Do you think it works, or should i wait till i find 24pin power supply. thanks for your...

This motherboard is designed to be used as a workstation or server. This mother board will need a specific power supply designed for this board as it can use 2 Xeon CPUs. Setting this board with the incorrect power supply will cause the system to not power up or at worse result in damage to the CPU, motherboard, memory, video and other devices including possibly the power supply. I suggest obtaining the proper power supply for this motherboard

The manual for this board states that the motherboard requires a 24 pin ATX power supply that also has an 8 pin 12 volt connector. The manual from ASUS recommends no less then a 300 Watt power supply. I would professionally recommend 500 watts or more if the system will use 2 CPUs and many hard drives in a RAID array.

A suitable power supply can be found here at Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817163111

The manual is here at ASUS's support site at http://support.asus.com/

The extra 4 pins on the power supply's atx connector is for new motherboards that require 24pin power supplies. If your motherboard has a 20pin port, then only connect the 20pin portion of your power supply connector.

If your power supply has a 24pin fixed connector that can't be split into a 20+4pin configuration, and your motherboard doesn't have space to let the extra 4pins on the side, then you might want to consider returning the power supply and change it for one that can be used as a 20 or 24pin. Otherwise you will need to cut the extra 4pins apart.

Trying to put a mother board together need help

Hi LadyT18,

Apparently your power supply is an ATX 20-pin type (v1.x) and is the standard a year or 2 back. Your motherboard being fairly recent uses the new standard which is ATX1 24-pin type (v2.x).

Your options are:
1. Replace your power supply with a higher wattage/XX pin;
2. You may still use the old 20-pin power supply provided that it is rated 300 watts or higher. Additionally, please bear in mind that using a 20-pin PSU to an ATX1 (24pin) may cause boot failure and/or instability during operation due to insufficient power delivery.

I scanned part of a motherboard's manual to illustrate how this could be done. Below is the image for your reference.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
