Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

Had a paper jam and cleared it all out. Now the message on the printer screen says "carriage jammed" and "carriage stalled". I cannot see anything obstructing the movement of the carriage, but I can only push it about 1/3 of the way to the right before it stops. Any ideas?

    I can see nothing like a bail or lever in the paper supply drawer that would appear to be sticking up and causing the carriage to jam.

    Aloha,
    I decided to let the printer (and me) rest overnight. I have just checked following your first recommendation and found the bit of plastic sticking up and the carriage is now freed to move. However, I now am getting a message on the printer screen saying that there is a problem with the following printhead magenta/cyan. I have re-seated the printheads, but with the same result. Any further advice would be most appreciated. I am about ready to pitch this printer into Kona Bay.

Can I have the exact model and brand of your printer? Meanwhile, you can try these steps:

1. Turn on the printer.
2. As soon as the carriage moves to the middle, remove the power cord of your printer; make sure the ink cartridge is pushed all the way to the right.
3. Remove the ink cartridge and plug in the power cord back.
4. Turn on the printer. When it ask for the cartridge, put the cartridge back and try to start printing again.

Option 1

After you lift open the top, look below the shiny bar that the Print Head slides left/right on. You'll see a row of 8 tiny rollers. In between the middle two rollers (rollers #4 and #5 from the left), look for a small plastic tab sticking up between them. Touch this tab with the tip of a ball-point pen to see if it pushes down. If it does, then push the "checkmark" button on the control panel.

Normal 0 I suggest you get a sheet of Card Stock (Heavy paper) and place it in the feed way. Then press the print button applying a slight amount of pressure on the Card Stock so it will feed throught the printer. The reason for this, in some cases I have been able to clear the paper track of debris that was deposited there over time. Worth a try.

    First you can check to see if anything is in the carriage path or if it is sticking on the right side. Sometimes the lever that moves the bail up and down to load the paper sticks under the carriage and will make a terrible sound like gears stripping and will give a jam condition. Check that out and see if that is the problem.

If paper is jammed, a Paper jam message will appear on the control panel display.

Follow these steps to clear the jam:

  1. Gently pull any jammed paper out of the output tray or sheet feeder.

  2. If the paper is stuck inside, turn off the Epson Stylus CX.

  3. Open the scanner, remove the jammed paper and torn pieces, close the scanner, and turn the Epson Stylus CX back on.

If paper jams inside the Automatic Document Feeder, clear the jam as follows:

The printing carriage stalled and I get error message : Clear carriage jam ..


This normally happens if there is something jammingthe head assembly from moving along the carriage rail. Turn off the power to the printer and see if you can move the head assembly by hand. Also check that there are no paper jams anywhere in the paper path and that the belt that moves the head assembly has not broken.

yes, that is a carriage jam and not paper, the grinding is from the clean station that gets blocked with dried ink and cant move. you need to open the printer and clean the ink off of the clean station so it can clean properly and not cause a carriage jam.

Carriage jam on hp photosmart printer


The print carriage may get stuck on either side or in the middle of the printer. The Carriage Jam: Open Door, clear carriage jam, and then press OK to continue error message may display on the front panel of the all-in-one.

Solution
The print carriage is the device which contains the print head and moves left to right during printing.

To resolve this issue, follow the steps below in the order presented.

Step one: Print a Self Test

Follow the steps below:
1. Press the Setup button.
2. Select Print Report and press OK .
3. The self-test page should print. If it prints a test page, there is no need to follow the remaining steps, as the error message may be false. Make sure the printer now prints from the computer (if installed on one). If it does not print, proceed to the step two.

Step two: Clear the paper path

Follow the steps below to clear the printer of any jammed paper and reset the printer.
1. Leave the printer on and then disconnect the power cable and the USB or Ethernet cable from the back of the printer. Do not reconnect them until instructed to later.

NOTE: Make sure the printer is on before disconnecting the power cord. Failure to disconnect the power cord from the rear of the unit can cause damage when removing jammed paper.

2. Open the top access door.

3. Make note of where the carriage is stuck and look for jammed paper. A paper jam can cause the error message and the carriage stall. Some paper may be jammed in different locations than those shown in the photos below.

NOTE: Do not use any tools or other devices to remove jammed paper. Always use caution when removing jammed paper from inside the unit.

If the carriage is stuck on the right side:
a. Check for any paper or object that may be restricting the carriage.
b. Move carriage all the way to the left side.
c. Check the paper path all the way to the right side and remove any paper still in the printer.

If the carriage is stuck on the left side:
d. Check for any paper or object that may be restricting the carriage.
e. Move carriage all the way to the right side.
f. Check the paper path all the way to the left side and remove any paper still in the printer.

If the carriage is stuck in the middle:
g. Check for any paper or object that may be restricting the carriage.
h. Move carriage all the way to the left side.
i. Check the paper path all the way to the right side and remove any paper still in the printer.
j. Move carriage all the way to the right side.
k. Check the paper path all the way to the left side and remove any paper still in the printer.
4. Remove the rear access door or duplexer (if installed) from the back of the printer.
5. Check for and remove any paper still in the printer.
6. Replace the rear access door, and close the top access door.
7. Reconnect only the power cable. If the printer does not automatically turn on, press the Power button.

NOTE: The printer may go through a warm-up period of up to two minutes. Lights may flash and the carriage may move. Wait until this warm-up period is complete before going to the next step.

8. If the Power light is on steady, print a self-test page as done in Step one.

If the Power light is not on steady and the carriage is still in a stalled position, proceed to the next step.

Step three: Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet

Verify that the printer is properly connected to a suitable power source by following the instructions below.
1. Verify that the computer and the printer have a three-prong power plug.
2. Remove the printer cable from any power strips or surge suppressors, and plug it directly into a grounded (three-prong) wall outlet.
3. Try the print job again to see if this step resolved the issue.

NOTE: If the printer prints when plugged directly into a wall outlet while disconnected from any power strips or surge suppressors, the power strip or surge suppressor may not be allowing sufficient voltage to reach the product.

4. If this did not resolve the issue, proceed to the next step.

Step four: Service the product

If you have completed all of the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service your product.hope this helps

1. Check if there are broken parts inside the printer-carriage area
2. Turn the printer on and off
3. Clear any paper jam by opening the rear access door at the back of the printer. If there are no paper jams. Clean the rubber rollers with a lint free cloth that is moist with water
4. Make sure that the carriage can move freely
5. Remove then reinstall the ink cartridges
6. Make sure that the control-panel faceplate is correctly installed
7. Plug the printer directly to the wall outlet
8. Perform a partial reset on the printer.
a. Unplug the power cord from the All in One
b. Press and hold # and 3 while plugging the power cord
c. Do not release the two buttons unless the printer would say reset
9. Try to print
10. If this would not resolve your issue then the printer sensor is already defective.
