Re: how do i connect my laptop to an enabled router
If you wireless on the laptop is turned on and can not detect the router look at the router wireless configuration settings. If it has multi channel broadcast, most do, change the transmit channel to channel 10 instead of the default channel of channel 6. You may have to change another setting in the router to do this. 108 mps will not work except on channel 6 so if this is checked remove that check mark.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

I believe that you are trying to get connected wireless using your Edimax Router, we may need to check some settings in your Edimax regarding the wan light not lit up and could be a possible reason why there is no internet connection.
1. First we will need to find an Ethernet cable for us to be able to connect your Laptop directly to your Edimax Router for us to be able to check and change any settings needed to enable your Edimax wireless connection. also make sure that the Ethernet cable is connected to the Ethernet ports behind the Router not the WAN port then the other end goes directly to your Router.
2. Once connected directly to your router from the Laptop open IE or any Browsers on your Laptop, in the Address bar type in 192.168.2.1 then press Enter this will prompt for a user name and password, User Name will be ' admin ' and the password should be 1234 unless you changed it.
3. Inside the Edimax setting page click on the Tab that says Wireless, check and see if the wireless is enabled if not then enable it or turn it on, after enabling / turning the Route ON save the settings by clicking on Apply or Save then it will prompt that the Router is restarting it will be 30 seconds to apply once the 30 seconds is up that should be done check your Edimax if the WAN light is already lit up, then you can try an connect Wireless from your Laptop.
I am having exactly the same problem. It occurred on Sunday 17th. I have phoned Optus who seem unable to work out what has happened. It will work wirelessly but not recognise it when set up via ethernet cable.
do you have security enabled on the wireless router? if so, disable to security and see if you can connect. if it works, check if you set the router security to use WPA2- it is possible that your laptop/wireless card doesn't support it- try to use WPA instead
I'm assuming that your 2nd laptop is wireless? Does your router have encryption? If it has, then you need to get the encryption key from one of the working computers. Access the linksys interface from one of the working computers. Usually this is done by going to http://192.168.1.1 (leave username blank, password is "admin"). Go to Wireless> Wireless Security. Is encryption selected? If yes, get encryption key #1 and use it on the non-working laptop to connect to the router. If encryption is not enabled, go to the steps below.
On the 2nd laptop, click on the wireless icon at the bottom right part of your screen. Look for the linksys router from one of the available wireless networks, click connect and enter in the encryption key when it asks for it (not case-sensitive. Usually it's 10 or 24 digits). If encryption is not enabled, it will not ask for the encryption keys when you hit connect. See what happens.
You may want to double-check if the wireless adapter on your laptop is enabled. If it is enabled, try to view the available wireless networks on your wireless connection and select the name of your wireless network. You may also want to check your wireless router if there is a wireless security enabled. It is important that you know the wireless settings on your wireless router to make sure that the wireless adapater settings on your laptop match the settings on the wireless router.
It is possible that the router has a wireless security enabled into it. The laptop needs the security key for it to connect to the wireless network. You can check the security enabled in your router from your router's User Interface page.
To access your router's page; launch IE from a computer that is working through the router. Then on the address field, type 192.168.1.1. It will open a window asking for a username and password. The default password to get into the router's page is admin.
Then, once you're in the router's User Interface, the main page that will open is the SETUP, beside it is WIRELESS tab. Click on it, then verify the wireless network name or SSID. Whatever name configured on it, is the name the laptop should connect to.
Then, there is a subtab under the main tab WIRELESS. The sub-tab is called, Wireless Security. Click on Wireless Security tab and then look for the netwok key enabled. Take note of the key which your laptop will be neeeding.
make sure that there's a wireless card installed in the laptop. if it has, check that it's installed properly on device manager. if it's installed properly check if the wireless capability of the router is enabled. you can access the router's web user interface for you wireless settings. if you have done evrything but your laptop won't still connect, try to isolate the problem by connecting another laptop to your router wirelessly, if another will connect porperly to the router, it means that there's somethign wrong with your laptop or the other way around
hope this'll help you and just ask me if you have other concern
You may want to check if the wireless switch is "ON" on the laptop most wireless ready laptops has either a button or toggle switch to enable the wireless radio.. if it's already enabled and you still cant connect to the wireless network, try changing the wireless channel from the router.

-- what is the brand and model number of your wireless adapter?
-- what is the operating system of your computer?
-- can you get online if you connect the laptop directly to the router?
