He can't even get in the safe mode because his laptop shut down during the bootup process. Is this the hardware malfunction ?

Start the laptop on just battery -- power "brick" unplugged. (If it doesn't start OK on battery ignore the rest here.) If it starts and boots OK, go into VAIO Control Center, select Power Management, then Battery Charge Functions, then click "Enable Battery Care Function" and click "Advanced". Assure that "Enable Battery Care Function" is clicked on the next page and either "Battery Care Function" or "Super Battery Care Function" below that is selected.

What you DO NOT want is "Custom setting -- 100%".

After you've done all of this, let the unit run down to maybe 40% battery before plugging back in, and cycle the battery down to 40% a couple more times over the next few days.

What's happening when the system shuts down is the power supply is detecting that the battery is being overcharged, and therefore is tripping a relay to totally disconnect power. (You can hear the relay click loudly as the power shuts off.)

At bootup press F8 and select Safe Mode to startup If it bootsup, then Start->All progs->Accessories->Sys Tools->Restore. Select an older date depicted by bold numerals, and restore to that date.

In that case press F8 at bootup and from the options you get, select Command Prompt. When you see a C:\ _ on the black screen type chkdsk /r/f and press enter key.
If this does not work then re-install Windows. Do not try to repair Windows, just reinstall.

My sony viao vgn-cs215j suddenly turn off by itself and it takes 20 minutes before i can re-start and use it again and after 15-20 minutes would shut off by itself again without any warning. what could be...

Sorry i nay be a month late on this thread... but better late than never. My Girlfriends sony vaio VGN-CS215J seems to be doing the exact same thing. After buying one of those computer fans that you rest the computer oneverything seems to be running normal. i would also recommend cleaning your fans inside the computer because dirt dust and grime can hold the fans back from cooling down the laptop efficiently and will cause the safety overheat shutdown to activate and shutdown your computer... that way it does catch on fire or fry any of your hardware inside of your computer.

If that does not work... your fans maybe malfunctioning or not functioning at all. this model of vaio has a grinding fan issue that can be very damaging to your cpu if not fixed.

hope this helps,
