Recovery CD problem

Hardrive on my HP media center is making noises and it freeze it self. I bought the desktop in Best Buy in 2003 and it was on clearance. I did not receive recovery kit with it because it comes built in the main hardrive. It looks like the previous owner made recovery cd and he/she kept it. I bought new 80gb HD, but I do not have recovery cd. I tried to get it from HP parts but they say that the do not have it. I am stuck. I can't get help from HP or buy it somewhere else. Can you please give me some advice on this.
Thank You

Re: Recovery CD problem

I did a Recovery. The computer works fine - BUT - I can not access my MS Office Suite. I do not have the CD (lost not stolen), and therefore do not have the key. MS will help me if I pay $50 to tell em my problem - OR - buy an upgrade. All of this was installed at Best Buy when I bought this ****** in 2005 by the Geek Squad. Is there a backdoor to the administrator (i already got it going from safe mode) but the software is not allowing me access.

Re: Recovery CD problem

Here is the main page for your Hp m1080n, all your drivers are here as well and they are free. You can install any operating system that you want. Except Vista..
You can use Windows Media Center software which is what came with it. Printed on a sticker on the case is the Media Center's CD key. "I understand you did not get the restore CD with the PC".You can do a fresh install of windows and install the drivers you may be missing from Hp link below. You can also install Windows home or pro but you will need the CD key as well.
Once you get a windows CD all you need to do is put it into the CD player & turn on the computer. The HP will see the CD and ask if you want to start from the CD. "YES". Windows will install.

Will it work wireless with my own router? HP Pavilion Media Center m8517c

You should be able to buy a wireless card from Best Buy or New Egg and plug it in to your motherboard. Then use the cd to install the drivers. It should make your old desktop wireless.

Good luck!

Do you know where I can find a recovery disc for an HP 873n Media Center PC? I called hp and they don't have one.

You are correct HP do not provide the recovery disks for this Media Center anymore.

I've just about searched the net for anyone who may have recovery CD's for sale but no no avail.

If you can still get into the operating system use HP Backup and Recovery Manager, its quick and user-friendly. To run, simply go to All Programs > HP Backup & Recovery > HP Backup and Recovery Manager. With HP Backup & Recovery Manager, file restoration is easy. To recover a deleted file, simply use the Restore Wizard.

For a full system restoration, press the F11 key during boot up and then select "Recover PC" from the menu if there is a recovery partition available (sometimes you have to hold down Ctrl and hit the F11 key on boot up)

Other than that you may have to purchase a Windows XP or Windows XP Media Center installation CD from a reputable store like PC World for example.

Good luck.

My two year old HP desktop crashed two weeks ago

Your best option at this point may be to just try to reload the OS from sratch. You will loose all of your data but at least your PC will work again. If you have the original HP OS disk or Windows Media Center disk just put it into your CD/DVD drive and turn your PC on. Then when prompted, press any key to boot of the CD. Follow the on screen prompts to reload.

If you don't have the discs, you may have a recovery partition on your hard drive. Try this website:

Hope this helps!!

Normally hp has a partition on the hard drive to recover windows. You need to check the software and see if thats built in. If not you should call hp and they can send you the recovery disk.

Recovering from a Recovery

Hey JLS95,

If you do not have a valid product key, there unfortunately is no way to access the Office software. In such cases it is recommended that you contact the manufacturer of your computer directly, assuming that the software was preinstalled on your computer at the time of sale. Not all manufacturers will provide recovery CD's or product key information with newer computers, and in such cases you must speak with the computer manufacturer to obtain them.

In the event that you purchased a full version of the MS Office suite from your local Best Buy™ store and had it installed by us instead, you should have been given the installation CD and all associated documentation once the work was complete. You may wish to double-check your store receipt to determine what the case may be, and if you did purchase a full version of the software you'll need to speak with a manager at the store where you had the software installed for more information.

Hope this helps you out.

Go Ahead. Use Us.

HP Media Center Desktop w/XP

Why would you want to connect to Windows? Yecch. Go to and check around for an interesting OS and filesystem combination.

Still, I'd chalk it up to your having plugged another bootable volume into the machine (e.g. a CD ROM) or otherwise changing the setup from what you brought to GeekSquad. Honestly, you've described the problem circumstances quite poorly. Does it not beep before booting -any- OS?
