Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a maxtor 3200 that was working & today is not being recognized by my PC. Everytime I unplug the USB cord either from the hard drive or from the computer, the hard drive makes a weird noise, like it's trying to do something. Is it dead? Is there anything I can do?

How old is it?? you really should have the ex-HDD ejected using the "remove usb device" radio button located in the taskbar by the clock. you can corrupt the drive by not removing it correctly. if the HDD makes loud grinding noises.., then it is a head crash which is attached to the armature in the drive.and its no good. but..i could be wrong..i would need to see it firsthand to confirm that it is dead. take it to your local computer shop to have them look at it.
let us know whats going on with it....i hope i have been of assistance

Computer doesn't recognize Maxtor 3200

There are a number of possible solutions to this problem and these are itemized elsewhere in this forum. I had the same problem and nothing worked so with nothing to lose I prised open the case and removed the USB adapter and unplugged the power light. This leaves a normal HDD with standard connections. I installed this in a PC and it now works. The problem must have been in either the adapter or the power supply. Not the perfect answer but possibly a way out to retrieve data.

I have Windows XP with service pack 3. My system no longer recognizes the Maxtor 3200 external hard drive. Do I need to get an updated driver to the hard drive? When I first connected the Maxtor HD. ...

When you plug in via USB, does the USB recognize it and not display as HDD? If that is the case, then it's probably disabled somehow. Access Computer management, and check from there.

If that doesn't work, try on a different computer. If it doesn't work, your HDD has gone faulty. And if you recently changed your board, make sure you have a high speed USB port.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 problem!!!

First, try another USB Cable. If that does not work properly then I would suspect the box or the drive has failed. If you just bought it, return it to the store and complain. They may replace it. As for your data?

Now if you want to become techie you can remove the hard drive from the box and attach it to you computer either copy the files back if you do not have them on your computer or format the drive if you have your files. Then put the drive back in the box and try to get a refund or buy a different external. I like a metal box with an AC cord plug. Best of luck.

Maxtor 3200 power indicator lights but computer won't recognize

ooooh, that sucks.

I assume you have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?
Have you tried to see if it will work on a different computer?

I hop you had it all backed up.
If nobody else's suggestion beat mine...then I give you 2 options.
You have to take it apart (might have to break the shell, since most aren't designed to be user friendly), once you have the actual hard drive out of its housing, open up the side of your computer, and hook it up.
it will have to diferent connection points. One will be power (thats the plug that has (i believe) 4 pins in it...hook that up so your drive has power...the other plug is for data (read/write), its either a sata or ide (depending on how they (maxtor) made it). I assume you dont know what sata or ide is...just google pics it...once you see a picture...you'll know.

anywho, once its hooked up...start you computer back up (FYI, when you do this 'operation', shutdown your pc...and then unplug it)
once you have it all done and loaded back into windows, it should automatically detect it (give it a few minutes).

that scenerio I just laid out for you, is assuming its anything but a hard drive issue.

if it is indeed a hard drive issue....then apart from sending to to some VEEEERY expensive palce that could extract the data for you. theres only one more option. Put the hard drive in the freezer for several hours, then take it back out and hook it up to you computer, if it detects it...move fast, and start transfering all your files off it...cause now its living on borrowed time.

the reason this works **sometimes**, is because of the hard drives heat, its its platter actually expands over time a (very very very tiny bit), enough to mess it up, and when its chillin in your frezzer, the platters contract a little bit...making you able to get your data back...hopefully.

hope all goes well.

Try some other USB device (memory-stick, printer, camera) in the USB slot in the Vista computer, just to "prove" that Vista will recognize _any_ USB device connected to that slot.
