-   I have a Mac  - won't recognize the digital photo frame keychain when plugged in  - no software needed is on the package - none came with it.  Any suggestions of what needs to be done?  -   tkille43

-   Have there been any solutions to the problem for this keychain? I use Vista and can't seem to get it to work. I can get as far as selecting the pictures I want and then can't go any further. The pictures will not load onto the keychain. Open for suggestions. I know it works on a vista OS because I bought one for my sister and installed it on her laptop. I can't get mine to work now.

-   I am using vista and I'm assuming it does not work there. This is very aggrevating. My 'write device' and 'read device' buttons stay gray so that I can't click on them.-   rachel81

The solution is....USB 2.0! This is now standard on new computers, but mine (that is just 1 1/2 years old) does not have USB 2.0. Actually, one out of six of my USB's say it is, but I never got it to work. The sad part to all of this hard work--it takes 5 minutes on the right computer!

If you need to borrow a computer, you will not need to send them all of your full size photos. Just "Save a Backup" on your computer and e-mail that file as an attachment--it's very small. The you will "Load a backup" to get your pictures into the KeyChain Manager. You will need to install the software on your borrowed computer, but as I'm sure you know, that's the simple part!

Hopefully this helps!

Have you installed you keychains drivers? What OS are you on? What is the model of your keychain? Try inserting it in a different usb slot...

- I can't find the particular model from books are fun, although I would like to ask if you tried resizing the photos first before transferring, it might be too large for the device, because some photo key chains have problems with really huge images.

If you can find the specific brand, then it would be helpful to resolve the issue. Have a Nice Day!

This is the e-mail that I received from Books are Fun....mine still won't work, so I plan on returning the key chain.

Dear Books Are Fun Customer,

We are very sorry you have been having problems with the Digital Photo Keychain. Please rest assured that the satisfaction of our customers is our number one concern. For that reason you may return the Keychain to us for a full refund. Return instructions can be found below.

We would also like you to know that we are working with the manufacturer of the device to resolve the problems the some people have had getting the photos to load onto the key chain, in particular those prompting the error message "failue to issue command to device". To date the manufaturer has provided us with a newer version of the software as in the form of "zip" file, sendable by email, which is attached to this message.

You may try unistalling the current digital key chain photo manager software and reinstalling the software by clicking on the link below. This link is in the form of a compressed "zip" file. When you click on it you will be prompted by your computer's operating system to "extract" the file (which decompresses it). Once that is done clicking on the file will open the install wizard and install the new software.

Make sure you plug in the digital key chain after the software had been installed. Disable any firewall you have active to ensure that this does not block the photo transfer. To test the device, load a single photo into the Digital Keychain Photo Manager software, then click "write" to transfer your photo to the keychain.

If this reinstallation of the newer version of the software does not work (it has worked for some but not all customers with this problem), we would like you to know that we are continuing to work with the manafacturer for a solution and hope to have more information for you shortly. As previoulsy mentioned, you may return the key chain to us at any time for a full refund.

Please return to:

I had same problems. Here is what worked for me. Go to My Computer and find "KeyChain.exe." (you can use the search function in windows xp to find it.) Open "KeyChain.exe" by double clicking on it. The program should now work. If it does, right click on "KeyChain.exe" and drag it to your desk top. DO NOT choose "move here" or "copy here"; DO choose "create short cut". If this does not work, let the keychain charge for a couple more hours. By the way, you should have installed the software before plugging in the keychain. If you didn't, uninstall, reinstall, and try again. Good luck.

I got this for Christmas.  I use a Mac laptop and had to find a Mac desktop to use the mini-CD.  Although the box and manual state that it has installation software for Mac, Windows and Linux, there is only Windows software on the CD.  What a rip!

I am so happy I found this thread. I have been going crazy with this Christmas gift. The program and direction seem so easy, but just won't allow pic on device. I am going to charge overnight and try again tomorrow. Thanks for your help, sorta, lol!

Update to my issue...
I installed the software on my son's computer (XP) and was able to load the pics from there without any issues or problems. I'm so glad I didn't have to return the products for a refund. It really is a cute little thing!

I also purchased FIVE digital keychains from Books are Fun...4 were gifts and 1 for me.My sister was able to install her 2 and get her photos uploaded, no problems. Not sure about my Dad or inlaws yet...haven't heard. Now, I use Vista, and while I was able to install the software and get my photos into the program, the actual "write device" button stays grayed out, so I can't actually get the photos to write to the device! When I go in thru explorer, it seems that my system doesn't recognize the device, so I'm assuming it isn't Vista-compatible...does anyone know if there is a driver or patch that will make it Vista compatible? Haven't tried getting in touch with B-A-F yet, since I saw this thread, I thought I'd try here first.
I see that link to a new driver...is this for the same product from Books Are Fun?
My other thought was to try to use my husband's or son's desktop, they both use XP...but from what I see here, XP users are also having problems?
Thanx so much for any help!
Terri

I also had same problem, same error codes. Tried to charge for two days straight and it will not take the charge. I also installed software twice, and tried different USB ports. Will not work. I have Windows XP which it says on the box is compatible.

Comment by sajack, posted on Jan 01, 2008

I have installed and uninstalled the software 2 times, front says USB Mode but when I try to put the pictures on the keychain I get the same message as everyone else gets cannot communicate the command. Deffinitely unpleased with this product.

Gosh, I have the exact same problem! I called Books-are-Fun but they say there is nothing else they can do for me. I asked for a refund on the device and they said they " Could not help me at the moment and thank you for calling. " and proceeded to hang up on me. I am getting extremley frustrated as this was a christmas gift from my young cousin and it would upset him to see me send it back

Comment by JudyPatootie, posted on Dec 25, 2007

Yup--same problem here--exactly. I hope Books are Not-so-Fun right now will help us out.

Nothing seems to work - the keychain has been charged for almost 20 hours, software has been removed and reinstalled, computer has been restarted, and still the same problem of picture not uploading from computer to device. Though the software did erase the sample photos that were stored on the device, so, as someone else said, the usb connection seems to be working. Very disappointing!

Same problem as described from other postings...frustrated because it was a gift from a mass gift swap at a party, so I don't know who it came from to be able to return to books are fun...

Comment by drmartin, posted on Dec 22, 2007

I am experiencing the same problem. I called books are fun and they sent me an updated version of the software (v4.75), but it is still giving me the same "failed to issue command to device" message.

They will refund your money on the devices if you return them. I have to wait until my school is back in session so that I can contact my school's representative.

I bought four of these little devils and I have exactly the same problem. There is absolutley no information about the manufacturer or any brand name in the packaging. They are fully charged (over 24 hours) I have installed, uninstalled and reinstalled the software repeatedly. I am getting the same error message as others posting here.

Comment by gbacha, posted on Dec 20, 2007

Oh my gosh! I'm glad to find this thread. I bought three of these, and my sister bought two. I've emailed BAF, but haven't gotten a response. I get the same error.

I'm still working on them, but I would be so grateful if someone figured this out!

Comment by Guest, posted on Dec 18, 2007

I have the same problem, and called Books Are Fun. Apparently this is a common problem. They said to be sure the device charges for at least 8-12 hours before trying to upload any pictures, and if you've already installed the software and tried to upload pictures and gotten the error message, you should uninstall the software, then reinstall it, and not try to use it until the device is fully charged. I haven't finished charging yet, so don't know if this works or not.

Comment by gatzemeiers, posted on Dec 17, 2007

I have the same issue. I have rebooted. I have tried just one picture. The software itself is used to reduce the picture size. " Failed to issue command to device." That is the persistant error. They have also been charging for over 15 hours. It does say USB 2.0...

Comment by Guest, posted on Dec 15, 2007

Having exactly the same problem with exactly the same product, purchased from Books Are Fun. I bought two of them, and both are giving the same error message. Have switched around usb cords, switched devices, and switched usb ports. The pictures load in to the software program fine, but don't upload to the device.

I have the same keychain and the same error - Everything looks like it's installed right - I have loaded pics into keychain software program - Computer recognizes usb connection and says it's installed and ready to use -
Looks like transfer starts and then I get that error message - and no photos - It does ERASE the photos that came on the device as samples - so It must communicate something...I have three of these and same for each.
When I try to restart computer though - it asks to end "card reader lookup" - Is that part of it?
