Question about Washing Machines

My Maytag model LAT9806AAE washing machine stopped functioning in the spin cycle. It still agitates, but will not spin dry the clothes.

None of your suggestions are possible reasons. These are already items I have verified/checked.

    1) Unevenly load makes the spin cycle to stop. (The spin does not even start when it supposed to in the cycle. Washer just times through spin cycle and does multiple agitations.)

    2) Check the lid, it should be closed. (The switch was verified to be functional. Furthermore, the machine would not agitate if the switch was not functional.)

    3) As additional step, be sure there is power to the machine. If any other function works ok, then I'm sure this is an issue with the lid switch. (No issue with power to the machine.)

I don't see how it could be either of your suggestions. Let me discuss each.

    * Defective lid switch. Gain access to lid switch and ohm test in open and closed position.

Response: I know it is not the lid switch. I have confirmed it is operating. If it was not operating the machine would not be alternating between working in agitation mode and then just timing through the spin cycle.

    * Lid plunger not making contact with lid switch. Use a pen to manually depress the lid switch (with the lid up). If washer spins, replace or repair plunger.

Response: I actually already did this before asking for advice.

    * Spin solenoid burned out or cut wires (older Whirlpool and Kenmore only). Ohm out solenoid (20-30 ohms). If OK, actuate solenoid with a test cord. Tug on wires supplying solenoid to ensure they are not cut.

Response: My unit is a Maytag. Is there something similar that could have occurred in the motor? The Maytag unit I have operates the moter in clockwise direction to agitation and would spin in counter clockwise rotation for spin.

    * Worn or broken belt drive belt. Look for excessive glazing on the sides of the belt or cracks in the power side of the belt. On Maytag, replace the belt set if they look glazed or shiny on the sides even thought the belts may look OK otherwise.

Response: I looked at the belts and had the front of the washer open with the cover off the motor. The belt is working fine when spinning clockwise for agitation mode, and does not spin at all in the counter clockwise direction.

    * Bad timer contact. On older timers, it's sometimes possible to run an external jumper to replace the bad internal contacts. Usually, however, the entire timer must be replaced.

Response: I can't imagine that four locations of the timer would have went out at the same time. There are four zones on the washer timer and all of those zones act the same way. They will agitate but not spin when the spin cycle is supposed to work.

    P.S.

The diagram you sent if for a front load washer. My model is a top load unit.

I also thought it must be the reverse direction of the motor, but wanted a second confirmation. The motor has been replaced and the washer is now operating fine.

If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

  • The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

  • The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

Hello,
This could be one of the following:

* Defective lid switch. Gain access to lid switch and ohm test in open and closed position.

* Lid plunger not making contact with lid switch. Use a pen to manually depress the lid switch (with the lid up). If washer spins, replace or repair plunger.

* Spin solenoid burned out or cut wires (older Whirlpool and Kenmore only). Ohm out solenoid (20-30 ohms). If OK, actuate solenoid with a test cord. Tug on wires supplying solenoid to ensure they are not cut.

* Worn or broken belt drive belt. Look for excessive glazing on the sides of the belt or cracks in the power side of the belt. On Maytag, replace the belt set if they look glazed or shiny on the sides even thought the belts may look OK otherwise.

* Bad timer contact. On older timers, it's sometimes possible to run an external jumper to replace the bad internal contacts. Usually, however, the entire timer must be replaced.

If you don't feel comfortable with these tests, please call in a qualified repair person.

There are a couple of things that makes the machine not to spin, check:

Unevenly load makes the spin cycle to stop. Distribute the load, close the lid and pull knob out. Be sure the washer is leveled and the water is acceptable for load size.

Check the lid, it should be closed. If the machine doesn't spin even if the lid is closed maybe the lid switch needs to be replaced. This is a safety feature and should not be ignored.

As additional step, be sure there is power to the machine. If any other function works ok, then I'm sure this is an issue with the lid switch.

I hope this information helps, Good luck!

My Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW top load washer only runs for the first few minutes of the cycle, it will not spin..it just stops..we've tried two cycles, the quick wash...it starts at 33 mins and then stops...

I'm and owner and will try to help. Are you handy and do you want to try a DIY fix?

From the wash times is sounds like the washer is agitating the wash load (tumblers are rotating the wash basket load) is that correct?

If so see if the machine will complete a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket. Set the Spin setting to Spin/Hang dry seting and start the cycle. It should take about 10 min complete. Does the Spin Only cycle complete with no clothes in the wash basket?

Some handy links if you are going to DIY.........Service Manual for reference.

My washer''s agitator spins but not the drum during spin cycle.

If you see the agitator moving, but not the tub..I guess, you have a defective transmission..this is tough without knowing a little more info.

HI. This is a drive assembly issue. The actual motor coupler and clutch are damaged at this point. These vital components should be replaced asap.

If the motor has a transmission, it could be stuck in 1st gear. I think the agitator running is normal.

There is a 1/4" machine screw in a recessed hole close to the bottom of the agitator. Remove screw. Lift agitator off agitate shaft.
