Question about Mtd Southwest No. 21a - 121r700 Gas Yd/Gdn Cultivator

5 Answers

Have a MTD 21A-121R900 2-cycle cultivator. I took it to the an authorized repair center and they said that it had a broken rod and couldn't be cost-effectively repaired. He did say that I could replace the motor, which he said is the same as a gas trimmer motor. However, he didn't offer to sell me a motor or tell me where to find one. Can someone point me to a source for a replacement motor that would be less expensive than buying a replacement for the entire unit? Thanks!

Any suggestions on a specific part number that will give the motor assembly? I don't want to buy any old trimmer and have to jury-rig the connection.

I was hoping for a part number or assembly number for the motor itself. I didn't need help finding an online merchant...I want to be sure that I buy a motor that will fit without having to jury-rig the connection.

I'm sorry, I must not be communicating clearly. I'm not looking for an individual part for the engine--I'm looking for the engine itself as a product, or as a sub-assembly of the cultivator. I would like to identify a source for the entire motor (or a string trimmer that uses EXACTLY the same motor, so the handle controls on the cultivator assembly will still work). All the parts lists vendors (the one's you list, as well as several others, only list components. Thanks.

I'm sorry that I'm not being clear. I don't want parts for the engine, I need the part number or assembly number for the entire engine. I want to be sure that a replacement motor will fit the mounts and controls. Thanks.

I'm obviously not doing something correctly, because I can't find my model, 21A-121R900, anywhere on the site you suggest. I was able to find larger motors on the site, but not the two-cycle.

Back to my original request...a full replacement motor, or a gas-powered string trimmer KNOWN to have the same motor & controls. Any ideas? Thanks.

Everywhere I look there are parts lists for the engine components, but nothing that shows the entire engine as a salable product.

Is there an outdoor power technician that knows what motor is used? Is there someone with lawn equipment experience that can identify an MTD gas trimmer that uses the same motor?

Lots of general suggestions--anybody with specific outdoor power experience with detailed information before I give up?

You can get a short block for your unit here. It is part # 753-04986 It will cost you $93.37 plus shipping and taxes. This will be all you need to repair it. Just remove the parts of your engine that are still good and install them on the short block. This is not a complete engine. It is the block with piston, rod, and crank installed. http://www.upstateoutdoorpowerequipment.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/76/MTD.aspx#top
If the cylinder and block was not damaged and can still be used just order the piston and rod assembly and install it in your block. It is part # 753-04367 and will cost you $30.13 plus shipping and taxes.

Sorry to hear the problems that you are having. Hope this information helps:

You can determine the part number and purchase it from this link:

http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=mtd&mn=121R+21A-121R900

just click the "Engine Parts" link.

Another website that sell parts is: http://www.buymtdonline.com

Just click the link "FIND YOUR PART" located at the left side , then click "LAUNCH ILLUSTRATED PARTS LOOK-UP" tool and put the model number 21A-121R900 - You will be able to locate the part number and buy it online. I personally like the first link because it's easier to browse.

Good luck Mr. Reaves.

Mtd 31cc cultivator recoil rope starter not retracting properly

The re-coil spring is most likely broken in the housing.
Part Number is: MTD 791-613102
Parts diagram is here:
http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=mtd&mn=121R+21A-121R700&dn=07281000001
Image of broken part is here:
http://www.mtdparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/parts/part-types/engine-parts/791-613102

Remove items 31, 34 and 40 of the first link to access the recoil. The spring has to be pre-wound during installation. I.e insert spring.. insert pulley.. wind spring mount pulley.

I'm looking for an owners manual for model # 41A-414A131. and a parts guide. We have to replace the shifter assembly.

Hi again 21A-414A131 works as a model number (MTD)

The parts can be found here: http://www.jackssmallengines.com/help.cfm

Use the model number above in the right cloumn of the web page and leave the part number blank

Brand: MTD
Model 21A-414A131

This is the shifter rod PN 747-0902 Gear Shift Rod

This should be your manual as it is for all models 410 - 422
