Question about Hitachi UltraVision CineForm 55VG825 55" HDTV
MY GREEN LINES ARE CROOKED ,RED AND BLUE ARE FINE, BUT GREEN LINES CAN'T BE ADJUSTED. THIS IS A 56" PROJECTION MODEL 5 YEARS OLD HITICHI .
.) THIS sounds like a convergence problem.
.) Most of these sets use 2 convergence IC's and if you provide me model number I can tell you which ones your set uses.
.) Usually just both chips need to be replaced and the set adjusted--sometimes there may be a resistor damaged by the chips when they fail.
.) There is a reason this happens--the chips are mounted on one large or two smaller metal heat sinks to keep them cool---they are about 2 1/2 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches tall with the STK NUMBER printed on them in white(they are black in color--18 pins each.) When they are installed a white grease is applied to the metal back of each chip to move the heat fast--after 5-8 years the grease(called heat sink compound) dries out and one of the chips cannot move the heat fast enough and it fails.
.) Both chips can be purchased on Ebay for less than 15 dollars for a pair plus shipping.
.) Most shops charge 300-400 for this kind of repair--if you are able to do it yourself you can save a lot of money----if not shop around and make sure BOTH chips get replaced--I have done hundreds of sets in the last year here and I charge 200-250; Any good tech can do this repair in your home---if a shop tells you it has to "go to the shop" keep looking.
.) Now is the slow time of year for most TV shops so if you cannot do the repair yourself shop around. 200-250 is a worthwhile repair and once it is done the new chips should last 5-8 years--These sets are much more dependable then the Plasma and LCD sets.
.)If you have any questions or need advice reply to this posting here.
