It is most likely the power supply burnt out. The capacitor's inside are made cheaper than the o'l days and get overheated easily. You can test capacitors with capacitor tester and service manual. You can test power supply output voltage with just a voltmeter

TV only formats at 480i

Check in your instruction manual to see if the set can actually work in 1080i. Most of the sets going back about 4 to 6 years ago were not capable of working in 1080i.
The signal coming to your Sat box may be in 1080i, but your Sat box has to be able to output 1080i. This can be quickly verified by calling the support for your service and giving them the model number of their Sat box.

I have a 40 inch Samsung TV which I've had about 3 years (sorry I Don't have the model number handy). I have DirectTV and an HD-DVR. The HD Channels were great up until about a few weeks ago. Now sometimes...

If your menus on the TV and other inputs look good then it is probably a resolution setting on your Directv box that needs to be changed. To get HD it needs to be set at 720p or 1080i. Please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks....

1080P video via HDMI generates awful interference

Your Plasma's native resolution is 720P. Go into the Blu Ray's output setup. you can choose 480p 480i 720p 1080i and 1080p. Set it for 720p that should clear up the issue. You may have to run Component directly to the TV since you only have 1 HDMI input and you can run Digital coax or optical to your AV receiver for audio. On a 50" TV the difference between 720p and 1080p using "GOOD" cables cannot be seen by the human eye. Above 50, yes it is noticeable.
Hope this helps.

The short answer is yep!! The longer answer will require that you post the model number. With that in hand I should be able to provide you with some detailed possibilities.

Bad Ghosting Panasonic

It sounds like you may have a couple of defective convergence IC's, and maybe a couple of resistors. A fairly easy repair. Since you already have a warranty on the set, I would have it repaired and let the company know you haven't been too pleased with the picture quality all along. They may be able to tune it up a bit after repairing it to really make it shine for you. Panasonic usually makes pretty good sets, you could do a lot worse with some of the other brands out there.
