Try the following procedure, may be it can help you.
Restart computer in safe mode (direct after Bios screen as windows OS going to load press repeatedly F8 key and choose Safe Mode).
In safe mode when Welcome Screen appears you'll get option for Administrator account along with your own account. Try to login to administrator account as they are mostly not password protected. If sucessful then go to control panel ->user accounts and click to enter into password protected account. Change the password for your account. close all windows and restart in normal mode.

If the administrator account is password protected too, then go to:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and read the procedure for password recovery.

There is usually a secondary (primary account)

Start up the computer and as it is booting repeatedly press F8

It should offer a few methods of booting up.

Select SAFE MODE and continue

When the login screen appears there should be an Administrator account. use this to log on

The user-name is Administrator and the password is usually left blank

If that works windows will continue to load. Once it has you can use the control panel to access the user accounts and reset your dads password to a blank one

Now reboot as normal.

Use the method to set the ADMIN password that way nobody will alter that either.

What is the OS?

XP = hackable, google and you will find a way to get back into your laptop
Vista = Tough luck, bring her to court and sue for property damage? I am out of answer for Vista.

Option 2: Take the HD out and buy a sATA HD reader. Copy the info from the HD onto the laptop/desktop you are using now. Format the HD and install a new OS.

I have a toshiba satellite a305-s6909 and just replaced the motherboard and when i went to power it on nothing comes up on the display the screen stays black?????

A couple of crazy ideas:

1. Press the Fn key with the (usually) blue icon that looks like two monitors. That's usually Fn/F5.. That could help if the keys were pressed before and the video was redirected to an external monitor.

2. The ribbon cable from the motherboard to the monitor came loose, or wasn't inserted during the replacement.

You can get a Password Reset disc download and burn to CD. Copy/paste the address below, into your address bar of your browser.
http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/cd080802.zip
Download this file and burn it to CD. Put into drive and turn on PC, and boot from the CD. Follow instructions, choose the correct USER. & BLANK the password. make sure you say OK to write the data, and reboot. The logon password will now be reset blank.

My Toshiba a305-s6909 notebook just comes up with a white screen, when I turn it on. I've tried holding the power button on but this does not help. All the keyboard lights seem to be on an occassionally...

so it is your display resolution issue.
When you power up press continue F8 key then enter in enable vga mode.
Then go to control panel and dispaly proeprty then change screen resolution to 1024*768.

but if you not see safe mode and other menu then you have to check your ram and motherbord.
Also check your Lcd screen.
Let me know if you need more assistanse.
Thanks.

I am prompted for a cmos password on start up and don't know it

If its a CMOS password , you can take the keyboard off ur laptop and there should be a reset switch to clear the CMOS

If its a windows password , theres loads of free utiliies that recover or change the forgotten pasword. you just download them then boot of a cd to run them
