My 250 gig works fine after I formatted the drive in FAT 32 format. Use a program like Partition Magic to do it as with XP its a bit of a mission to do it. Then it will read it. It takes about 90 secs to c the drive with about 120 gigs of mp3's and divx on. Good luck m8.

The unit shows "cannot play usb device" when ever I put an external drive to it... in the Manual it states that it will not read anything more 10 gb but I have seen on you tube where people plug in 300 GB + but they do not say what type of drive it is. does anybody know what drive works with this unit?

Can i attach backup device to my lg HT356SD?

I would say yes, from what the manual says, the LG HT356SD has some Unique Features:

#1 Portable In : Listens to music from your portable device.
(MP3, Notebook, etc)

#2 USB Direct Recording : Records music from CD to your USB device.

Read the manual, on page 26 it will show you how to do it, I found it at www.theatresystem-manual.com under lg, or go directly to the link I provided.

http://www.theatresystem-manual.com/manuals/lg/LG_HT356SD.pdf

Recording to USB
1. Connect the USB device to the unit.
2. Select a DVD/ CD function by pressing
FUNCTION.
One track recording - You can record to USB after
playing the file you want.
All tracks recording - You can record to USB after
stop.
Program list recording - After showing the
programmed list, you can record it to USB.
3. Start the recording by pressing X REC.
4. To stop recording, press Z STOP.

Portable device tab missing in device manager

What type of portable device? Are you talking about something like an external drive or a usb flash drive or something that you plug into the computer's usb port? If so, maybe the usb port is bad, so try another usb port.

Maybe the portable device is bad, so try using it on another computer and see if it is shown. Most times it will show up under My Computer along with the hard drive. Click Start/My Computer and see if it is shown.

How do i download the instructions on how to use this product

i am not sure if there are any instuctions with such a device.
a usb hardrive is a what is called a plug and play device.

this is a data portable transfer device once connected to a PC for example it will act like an extra hard drive or HDD. when you connect it using a usb cable it should be found automatically. and will show up on your pc as a new drive letter.

example you have drive C: as your main hard drive.
when this hard drive is connected it will show up with a new letter such as D: or anoter letter.
and when you right click it you can check the properties to see how much capacity it has.

you can and a remove files to it in the same you can your normal hard drive the advantage is you can remove it while the pc is still running and move it to another device such as other pc, dvd player etc and play or move data around. when you want to remove the data from the drive you can connected it to a pc and find the files and delete them or even format the whole drive if you wish.

i hope this was useful.
