If it is like most of the others, if you have the drum exposed, just take a #15 Torx screwdriver into the opening the shaft goes into and unscrew it. That will allow access to the clutch...Good luck...Lee

This could be the clutch (if it has one), drive shaft, or gearbox components at the end of the drive tube.


When the head is turned manually, does the clutch drum, if equipped, turn on the other end?


If so, the clutch components may have failed. If not, check both ends of the drive shaft and each of the sockets that it engages for any wear or stripped metal. If all of that looks good, it could be a failure within the gearbox.

Replace pull cord


Replacing a pull cord is not easy. After you remove the shaft, then the drum cover, you are left with the drum and clutch. There is a screw in the center of the drum which has to come off. Then there is a the clutch which if not removed correctly will come apart on you. Only after both parts are remove can you get to the pull cord.

Rope will not recoil complety


Replacing a pull cord is not easy. After you remove the shaft, then the drum cover, you are left with the drum and clutch. There is a screw in the center of the drum which has to come off. Then there is a the clutch which if not removed correctly will come apart on you. Only after both parts are remove can you get to the pull cord.

Pull cord broke for tb70ss


Remove the tube that holds the flex-drive shaft from the front of the motor cover.Remove the rear engine cover. Remove the throttle cable from the carburetor. Mark and unplug any wires for the on/off switch that go to the ignition coil (underneath front cover) if possible. Now if you have pulled the driveshaft tube out of the way, the clutch drum is up next. Inside it, screwed into the very end of the engine's crankshaft is a Torx #25 screw. Before you loosen it, you will have to lock up the engine. To do so, remove the spark plug. Pull on the starter until the piston is down, then insert a length of clean, soft rope into the engine. The engine will come up and compress the rope, thus locking it in place to allow clutch drum and clutch removal. Loosen the T-25 (Star bit or Torx head) screw inside the drum.. You may be able to remove it with a long thin-blade screwdriver also.It probably won't come completely out...it is made this way. Next, remove the clutch. It is screwed onto a small threaded section of the crankshaft Removal is counterclockwise.. It will be pretty tight. To help, apply peneterating oil. Whack the ears of the clutch near the center with a hammer and a dull flat-blade chisel or a small piece of wood unless there are bolts. then use a wrench. It will turn counterclockwise for removal and there will probably be a removal direction arrow on it's face. After getting that off, remove the Torx screws holding the cover to the engine. The starter unit should be mounted inside as it mates with the top of the flywheel to start the motor. Remember to preload tension (5-7 turns) on the starter unit. Make sure the handle is installed. Jam the unit with a screwdriver or vise grips so you can insert and tie off the new rope. Then remove jam device and let recoil pull your new rope into place while holding the handle. Reassemble and you are done. Disassembly requires Torx head drivers and a good flat-blade screwdriver. Post back if needed.

Prosedure on how to fix if the uper flex rod goes out it does not spin when motor running


The problem with your upper drive shaft may be clutch related. Here is how to get to the clutch to inspect it and the clutch drum that drives the flexible drive shaft.
Remove the tube that holds the flex-drive shaft from the front of the motor cover.Remove the rear engine cover. Remove the throttle cable from the carburetor. Mark and unplug any wires for the on/off switch that go to the ignition coil (underneath front cover) if possible. Now if you have pulled the driveshaft tube out of the way, the clutch drum is up next.It should have some play in it, but not a lot. See if it spins freely. Inside it, screwed into the very end of the engine's crankshaft is a Torx #25 screw. Before you loosen it, you will have to lock up the engine. To do so, remove the spark plug. Pull on the starter until the piston is down, then insert a length of clean, soft rope into the engine. The engine will come up and compress the rope, thus locking it in place to allow clutch drum and clutch removal. Loosen the T-25 screw inside the drum.. You may be able to remove it with a long thin-blade screwdriver also.It probably won't come completely out...it is made this way. If you get the drum off, inspect the clutch. The clutch pads should be uniform with no nicks, cuts or scorch marks. Check the plastic housing on the tube. It should not have score marks either. Next, if needed, remove the clutch. It is screwed onto a small threaded section of the crankshaft Removal is counterclockwise.. It will be pretty tight. To help, apply peneterating oil. Whack the ears of the clutch near the center with a dull flat-blade chisel and hammer unless there are bolts. then use wrench. It will turn counterclockwise for removal and there will probably be a removal direction arrow on it's face, Use some lithium based grease to lubricate the upper and lower flexible drive shafts. Post back if needed.

How do I replace the starter pull rope on TB70SS?


You must first remove the shaft assembly by removing the Torx/Flathead screws that hold on the trigger. Then you remove 3 screws that hold the engine to the shaft. Next you can remove the shaft assembly and you will see 4 or so screws holding the black surround around the clutch. You need to remove this to get to the pullstarter. Once you get to the pullstarter make sure not to release the coiled spring or you'll have a hell of a time putting it back in. Typically that are behind the pullstarter assembly.

My TB70SS cranks and runs perfect! The problem is the clutch seems to not engage. The head will spin at idle speed, but, when I pull the throttle trigger, it seems to bog a bit, and the head almost quits...


There may be an issue with the clutch or the clutch drum. Some disassembly may be required if the string head doesn't spin quickly when accelerating the engine. The clutch itself is threaded onto the crankshaft of the engine near the handle end and the clutch drum is screwed into the end of the crankshaft. If you can disassemble to that point, you will be able to diagnose your clutch problem...maybe it is worn severely and needs replacing.

How do you take the clutch assembly off to get to the starter rope?


Thereis a T-10 or T-15 Torx Head screw in the recess at the end of the crankshaft. Loosen it (it may stay in the end of the drum) and drum will come off. Clutch is threaded onto crankshaft. Loosen it counterclockwise, but carefully. Rap the inside part near the crank with like a flatpblade chisel. Spraying the center with penetrating oil beforehand may assist in this step. Use Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster. vDon't strike the outer shoes of the clutch!
