Can not access menu from universal remote

when I program in my universal remote, I can not access the menu. I get there and the buttons dont work to scroll. The original remote is broken in half and can not use it. How can I get through the menu without a remote?

- I have the same problem. The original remote is missing so purchased a universal. I cannot access the menu to program. Toshiba says universal remotes are not compatible so to purchase a Toshiba remote by calling a parts distributor in Miami. I live in Georgia.
