Question about Western Digital 500GB My Book World Edition 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Arogsy 500GB HD Drive won't boot up

I dropped it. Now when I press the 'On' button it makes a strange noise a couple of times that's similar to its normal 'startup' noise, but it repeats four or five times, then powers off. When connected to TV the normal startup screen displays, then a 'No Disc' error appears.

Is there a way to crack the thing open and place it into a desktop box or somehow access it? Have about 450GB of movies, TV shows, etc...

OP here, thanks for your input, but it's already a USB port drive also, and doesn't show on the computer when I hook it up. Can you give me a link to a company (UK/Ireland preferably) that can recover the contents?

If you have dropped it, most likely the hard disk is damaged, especially if it makes clicking noises..
The case is probably screwed together, but the screws are hidden with plastic covers or under a label.
If you are able to remove the hard drive you can connect the hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter and conect it to a working computer's USB port. It will see it as an external hard drive, if the hard drive is OK you can view and open the folders and files.
You can also connect the hard drive to a desktop PC as a slave drive if the PC's BIOS can support a hard drive of 500Gb.
If you are desparate to recover data from a damaged hard drive, there are companies that can recover data from these drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

the drive is failing, its hard to recover something (15% recovery is me being optimistic) you can try using recuva as a last ditch attempt to get your files (http://www.piriform.com/recuva). best of luck :)

your computer is trying to boot from the new istalled drive instead of the drive containing the operating system,
you could try swapping the SATA cables on the mother board, or enter the BIOS by rebooting and at start up, holding the correct key (acording to the manual) then look for BOOT DEVICE some where in the BIOS menu, change the boot device to the correct hard drive (the one containing the operating system)

500 GB Seagate freeagent classic - windows 7 won't start when power cord is connected. Okay to connect after boot up and HD works find. Is there a workaround that will allow the external HD to remain in...

Most likely the problem is that your computer is trying to boot from your external hard drive and that why windows 7 wont start up but it is a very easy fix. with the freeagent attached start up your computer system and when the first BIOS screen is displayed press either the F8 key or the ESC key to enter BIOS setup it should say on the screen which button you need to press. Once you press the correct button the BIOS set up screen will load there should be tabs at the top and select the boot tab, under the boot tab there will be a list of devices in the order that the computer will try and boot off of them all u need to do is move your freeagent to the bottom of the list and every thing will work perfect.

I hope this helped.

Thank you,

My hdd is a portable 500gb and its showing zero memory..how can i recover my data????????/

There are two causes for this.
1. Something wrong with the external case. Either not connecting to the HD correctly, not giving enough power, or just a software issue
2. Something is wrong with the actual drive

The best way to figure this out is to open up the external and remove the drive. Take the drive and connect it to a computer (computer is off) and boot up the machine and see if the drive starts to spin. If it makes any strange noises (clicks, beeps directly from the drive itself, grinding noises) turn off the computer right away as you might be causing more damage. If the drive is spinning though and not giving any warning signs then let the computer continue to boot and there's a good chance you'll be able to access the data. If you were having these warning signs, the best thing you could do is look into professional data recovery for the drive. It'll probably be pricey, so you'll have to decide how much the data is worth to you.

My LaCie 500GB Quadra spins and clicks. Have tried (Mac) DiskWarrior and Disk Utility, but the drive ignores them and spins, clicks, and the blue light flashes

If you can hear clicking then I am afraid there is a serious problem with the hard drive.

The noise you can hear is usually known as "the click of death" when referring to hard drives.

Make sure you use ONLY the cable that came with it or a SHORTER one.

Dont connect via a USB hub

Make sure you only user the power supply that CAME WITH IT.

Most common causes are that the drive unit was dropped or mishandled or just plain old age

There is no known cure unless the data is mission critical

In which case you could sent it to a data recovery specialist but this is usually VERY expensive.

If you are advised to place it in a freezer or anything similar then that is up to you
but my advise would be to run from the person who may give this advise.

This is very old fashioned advice and meant for very old types of drives that used to get very hot.

If it a drive that was / is from an external enclosure then you could still use the enclosure and just place a new hard drive in there.

Another way to test it it to remove it from the enclosure and connect it directly to a PC with a suitable interface eg. SATA or IDE.

LaCie d2 Quadra 500 GB HD dropped, now makes strange chime/alarm

Modern hard drive motors can easily become seized after an impact. The only DIY solution I am aware of is the use of a heat gun over the back of the drive motor. The build up of heat within the motor is sometimes enough to free it.

If the drive was running the problem may be due to a phenomenon known as "sticktion" where the drive head is actually stuck to the disc surface. If this is true then you need a data recovery company.

If it's making a clicking, rattling, or "leaking" (like the sound of air whistling out of a balloon) then the drive may be damaged and it's time to contact Western Digital support.

Listen to your power supply and see if it is making a faint buzzing noise. Try your device with a new power supply. With a new power supply my drive now runs fine, and was not corrupted.
