Back-up works but cannot see on my system - xp professional

I have basically done all that you suggest and while it will do a back-up it will not show-up on the computer as a separate drive. It does show the yellow exclamation for the US Mass storage device though - how can it not read it, but still do a backup - that has me confused.

Hi there,

How are you backing up you data? You should specify the drive and location where your backup file should be saved when you started the backup.

Do you see the external drive from your windows explorer? Make sure it is detected by the system.

If you have other clarifications, please don't hesitate to ask.

First ensure the HD is working on a different computer, otherwise HD is faulty.

Ensure that you log on Window using an administrator account, and that there are no restrictions on software or devices installation on this computer.

If the Lacie is not detected by Windows, go to hardware devices, in control panel, and check if there is a yellow mark on USB. In that case you will need to uninstall and reinstall USB.

If nothing in there, try using a different USB cable, unplug the Lacie and plug the disk USB to a different port. The disk should start self installing.

If still no luck , try unplugging power cable from PC and adapter from external disk. If the computer is a laptop, also remove battery. Plug back computer, then try re-connecting the disk.

If still no luck and disk is not detected, at that point a solution may be reinstalling Windows, providing that disk is working.

If instead the problem is that you cannot recover a backup, then backup file may be corrupted.

Have problem with windows Xp pro.

You can get the correct drivers from the Gateway website. Use another computer and download all the Windows XP files for that model number from the website. You need your model number of your pc. Get the files for your motherboard, video, sound card, network card, etc. save them to a usb key or a burn them to a cd. Take the usb key/cd to the other system and load the drivers.

This will get your system back up and running in now time.

I hope this helps you.

Uninstall XP Professional

If the computer was upgraded, then go into START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE Programs, see if uninstall Windows XP Pro is there. If it is you can uninstall it and not loose anything and the computer will reveert back to the operating system that was on there, before th upgrade.

Sometimes it is there, sometimes not.

If that doesn't work, then go to START | CONTROL PANEL | ADD/REMOVE Programs | windows components, and take out any uneeded components. Also check your system tray (bottom right by the clock) and see if there are eny programs there that you can close or better still uninstall as they eat memory and slow down your system.

Virus

Assuming you have an anti virus and spyware programme installed:- you need to turn off system restore first as it backs itself up and then run your anti virus programme, prefferably in safe mode, restart the pc and turn system restore back on.
