Question about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
I remember wrestling with that myself a while back. Please see this post, and these links. this MS article, and the windows installer cleanup utility here.
Seems to me that with all the service packs and updates and so forth, somehow the installation got corrupted. I had to uninstall the lot and slowly, painstakingly rebuild from the ground up, downloading the installer for a .net version, installing, rebooting , then the service pack for that version, reboot, then the next, etc. in order until I built it back up. Turn off automatic updates while you do it. (Or you can try uninstalling it all and then going to windows update for the downloads, but install them one at a time and reboot before proceeding further. It finally worked. It was a pain. My heart goes out to you...
