Question about KitchenAid K45SS Classic Stand Mixer

2 Answers

My Kitchenaid K45 mixer only runs at high speed. Wonder if the speed control phase board (from mendingshed.com and various KA parts stores) intended for K45SS is compatible. Thanks.

I just fixed my 8 yo mixer! Would only work at highest speeds... first took it apart because it was making a terrible noise. Tthrough this site I figured out how to take it apart and replace the grease. Gears were in good shape, but a small nut fell out of the back while I was working on it. Finished putting it back together, found the spot where the nut belonged- holding the metal housing of the motor to the head. I turned it on and all I could get were the two highest speeds so I took the back panel off again and played with the bottom screw- it seems to adjust something on the wire that controls the speed. So take a philips screwdriver and adjust that screw and see if you get all the speeds back.

Speed problems with kitchenaid artisan mixer.

It sounds like two issues, the first is going to be the phase board, you will need to replace it, that should fix your speed issue.

The second issue will be a stripped gear, in that mixer there is a nylon gear that commonly goes bad, that would be the worm gear.

Here is a link to the phase board: http://www.mendingshed.com/kaphaseboard.html
Here is a link to the worm gear:
http://www.mendingshed.com/kawormgear.html

Also here is a link to the service manual: http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf

The service manual will show you how to take apart the mixer, and put it back together.

Kitchenaid Hobart K45SS when set at 1-2 accelerates to high speed when making dough. How can I fix this?

Usually when the mixer runs only on high speed it is caused by the control plate adjusted incorrectly or the control plate spring unhooked. Remove the trim & end cover on the mixer and check the control plate spring, if unhooked, attach to bottom of the control plate and squeeze the spring end, also check the speed control plate screws, there are 3 screws on this plate, one at the bottom two at the top, see if adjusting the top screws slows your mixer down.
Next check the wiring of the mixer, Insure everything is wired correctly, to get wiring diagram go to the last page of the service manual. Here is a link to the service manual: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf
If neither of those fixes the problem it is probably a bad phase control board, or a shorted phase control board. With the line cord disconnected, pull the t-bar contacts to open and insert a piece of paper between them so they cannot close. Reapply power-the mixer should just run or buzz trying to run, if it operates at full speed the phase control is defective and needs to be replaced.
Use the service manual to aid you in taking apart the mixer, trouble shooting the problem and putting the mixer back together, based on the mixer only running at high speed some of the time I would assume it is the speed control phase board.
If you have any questions let me know.
Thank you,

My kitchenaid k5ss will not turn on

Did you remove the brushes at any point? If you did it is possible that the brushes are installed correctly. The brushes have a tapered/dog eared side to them, this needs to be lined up within the mixer, if they are not lined up correctly the mixer will not turn on.

Was the speed control board cracked or was it the phase control board? If the bottom screw on the speed control plate is not adjusted correctly the mixer may not turn on as well.

If neither of those fixes the problem try the troubleshooting steps in the service manual. Here is a link to the service manual for the K5ss mixers. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf

Kitchenaid K45 Mixer will only run at one speed, fast

is it a K45 or a K45SS? If it is a K45 you will have to replace the filters inside and probably the speed control plate, if it is a K45SS then you need a new phase control board. The K45 is pre 1978 and the K45SS is post 1978. Your information is correct on pre 1978 K45 models that the capacitor is bad, but it might be cheaper to go garage sale hunting and find a second machine as the parts are no longer made and having spares on hand may be a significant advantage in the future, also there are a great many of the K45SS parts that will also repair the K45 mixer so it may not be a practical solution. Watch ebay regularly for K45 parts, they come up every couple of months. On the parts diagram also look for the K5 diagram as it is identical to the K45, one is a 5 quart mixer and the other one is 4.5 quart, same parts same motor same everything.

Kitchenaid deluxe 5 edition stand mixer runs on speed 10 and after 30 sec stops I thought it was the speed control pannel then I order one online and change it but that work 2 times and i have the original...

In the Artisan mixers the problem can be caused by two different parts. First the speed control plate. When you remove the end cover from the mixer the first thing you see is the speed control plate. There are 3 screws on this, two at the top, one on the bottom. Try adjusting the top two screws, to adjust, turn in the control plate adjusting the screws an equal amount.
Also check to see if the control plate spring is unhooked. Remove end cover, and check control plate spring. If unhooked, attach to bottom of the control plate and squeeze the spring end.
It can also be caused by incorrect wiring, check the wiring, the last page of the service manual will be a wiring diagram for your mixer. Here is a link to the service manual. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf
Last, if the control plate is properly adjusted, the control plate spring is hooked correctly and the wiring is correct you will need to replace the speed control phase board. With the line cord disconnected, pull the t-bar contacts to open and insert a piece of paper between them so they cannot close. Reapply power-the mixer should just run or buzz trying to run. If it operates at full speed, the phase control is defective and needs to be replaced.

My kitchenaid mixer run on high at all times

If your mixer only runs on high speed there are 3 things that can cause that. The first thing to check will be the speed control plate, Remove the trim and end cover on the mixer, the first thing you should see is the speed control plate, this has 3 screws on it, try adjusting the top two screws 1/4 turn, this should slow the mixer down, do not over tighten. Also check to see if the control plate spring is unhooked. If the spring is unhooked, attach to bottom of the control plate, and squeeze the spring end.
If this does not fix your mixer, check the wiring of the mixer, you can locate a wiring diagram on the last page of the service manual.
If the speed control plate is adjusted correctly and all the wiring is correct it will be your speed control phase board. You can test the speed control phase board to see if it is shorted. With the line cord disconnected, pull the t-b ar contacts to open, and insert a piece of paper between them so they cannot close. Reapply power-the mixer should just run or buzz trying to run. If it operates at full speed, teh phase control board is defective and needs to be replaced.
Here is a link to the service manual: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf
This will aid you in taking the mixer apart, troubleshooting and putting it back together, remember the wiring diagram is the very last page.

Motor noise

It has been my experience with knocking kitchenaid is one of three reasons all related to the speed control of the mixer1 speed control board adjust speed screws2 speed Phase control board, needs replacing3 The motor governor behind the speed control board needs replacing
Speed board = $9.00Phase Board = $20.00Governor = $10.00Your time + one week for ordered parts asnd one hour to remove and replace.

all work is performed at the rear of the mixer and you need only a phillips #2 screwdriver, a pair of needle nose pliers, an 11/32 open end wrench (you will need this to adjust your speed control board after new install) and that's it. easy work all remove and replace. Oh! make sure that you pit some thermal paste behind the phase control board to avoid burn out.

But!!! before you buy parts and do all that, try adjusting the speed contol board first. Go here for a parts list for your model.

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/product_literature/search_results.jsp?searchTerm=KV25G0X&siteCd=KAD&userType=Servicer

then go here for instructions on tuning the mixer speed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUo_ZU5xh3o

if after you tune it you still get the knocking then use the parts list to order parts. two good parts sources are goodmans.com and mendingshed, com, they are reliable and have the parts in stock.

Hello, When my wife puts the speed control to the low settings the speed is not low. It speeds up and slows down in waves and then continues at just the high speeds. What's going bad and can I replace...

Hi MIKEY, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! By the symptoms you are describing one or two possible electronic components to your wife’s mixer are going (or have gone) bad. The good news is that, with a little effort, you should be able to repair the mixer yourself.
The inspection and troubleshooting of the inside of your mixer is a DITY capability, particularly if your mixer is out of warranty. Just be sure to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website a http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> and enter the 6 character model number, in your case KSM150P and select the next to last file KSM150PSWH0.pdf (773.44 KB) (it’s the white model that all…) listed under Parts List (61). (Verify that it matches your mixer model).
This parts list manual provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the part names and numbers. Turn to pages 8 & 9, titled: “Motor And Control Parts” and locate Illus. Nos. 28, 29 and 30; Control Plate Assembly; Governor Assembly, and Phase Control Board, respectively. I suspect your mixer’s erratic behavior is being caused by one, or more of these components going ‘bad.’ Inspect all your connections to Control Plate Assembly from the Phase Control Board to see if one hasn’t come loose. Unfortunately the whole controller assembly is fabricated on a little PC board which was not meant to be 'home fixed', and my 'expertise' ends there. A local small appliance repair shop should be able to determine if the controller assembly is functioning properly or not, or you can just order replacement parts without the testing. And although the Governor Assembly is a mechanical device, if something is loose or broken on it that may also be a contributor to the mixers malaise.
Also, while your mixer is apart it would be ideal to check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your KA mixer yourself.
Here are five potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com; and Grainger.com. If you clear the lubricating grease from your mixer, you’ll need to replacethe grease with a ‘food grade grease’ (although I’ve seen automotive bearing grease used. - your call.) Prices can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Finally, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able to completely disassemble, repair and reassemble your mixer.
If you feel this is beyond your capabilities and would be too difficult to do yourself you can take your mixer to a local small appliance repair shop and have them troubleshoot and fix your mixer. KA Customer Care can provide you with the name and phone # of the closest authorized KA repair shop in your area or you can do a Online web search, but be sure to get at least three estimates before deciding to commit to one repair shop. Good luck. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

My kitchen aid mixer model k45 will only operate at high speed.

Hi REINO66, I suspect you (speed) Control Plate Assembly has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
The good news is that this can be fixed quite easily (OK, maybe with a little effort) by yourself if you are a DITY type person, feel adventurous, and your mixer is not under warranty. However, before you start to disassemble your mixer, be sure you have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home.
Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use K45SSW, and select the file listed under Parts List (1), K45SSWH0.pdf (341.41 KB). Check to ensure it matches your mixer model.
Turn to pages 6 & 7, titled: Motor And Control Parts, which provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer’s electrical components, along with all the parts. Find Illus. No. 25, Control Plate Assembly, Part No. 240904-2, which is the part that needs to be replaced.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able replace your Control Plate Assembly.
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

Only runs on high speed

I just downloaded the KitchenAid service manual from http://www.mendingshed.com/kitaidparts.html
In that manual, on page 13, for the problem "mixer runs at full speed", two possible causes are listed: control plate spring unhooked or phase control shorted. There are instructions about how to proceed in each case. I'll be trying that out on my machine.
