They are pads underneath the printer assembly where the excess ink from cleaning and printing goes. After a while they get full of used ink and need to be replaced. The whole print engine has to be removed to replace them and then you need access to service mode to reset the counter.

I saw another posting on this printer doing this. This is not a user replaceable part according to the Canon website. You will need to take the printer to a service location to have the waste Ink well replaced.

Keeps alarming and comming up with ink waste absorber nearly full. Wont print. How do i change it please.

waste ink ink absorber will be at the bottom plate. You have to dis-assemble the machine. After replacing, you need to reset the main board. Better to contact an authorized service professional.

It says waste ink near full where is this waste ink located?

The waste ink absorber for this machine is on the bottom, the whole case is covered at the bottom with absorbent pads. The pads are cheap, but you need to access diagnostics to be able to reset the error code after they are changed.

Waste ink near full error

Canon's a little shady when it comes to this, since any waste ink pad I've seen never has been more than 30-40% full. You can reset that status without cleaning the waste ink out and the printer should return to normal.

1) On the printer, press Additional Functions, Scan, Copy, Scan. This will put you in service mode.

2) Select Test mode at the bottom

3) Select #8 Printer Test, wait for more options. It should say 8-2 or 8-3; push the + or - button until it says 8-3 then hit Select. The menu will now say EEPRON Clear

4) Select Ink count which is option (0) and press set

5) Press Stop/Reset, then the power button and wait for it to restart.

I hope this helps!

Message code on cannon copier

You need to have the waste ink absorbers replaced, the cost of the absorbers should be around $20.00 and service is usually around 50.00. That is a very messy job, you must disassemble printer removed used/ waste ink pads in the bottom of machine reset ink counters and the reassemble printer.
