My print is too light, and when I make copies I have to set the contrast all the way up. I recently replaced the toner and the drum. Is it possible some setting got changed that makes it print lighter than it used to?

    1st step:

If you are a technician,Clean laser unite all mirror, then print from computer If you fix it so print is very fine.Or other way clean scanner lens then solve your problem. It is service formula.

    2ND step:

When you were replacing the drum did you tuch the drum surface?Best would be that you take some toner on piece of cloth, and polish the drum, while turning it in good direction, that the cleaning blade can clean it.After you must let it copy about 50 copies.

You can try to replace the whole drum unit cexv14, or clean the laser unit.

Also could it be that the toner unit, or toner cleaning blade are not properly distibutes the toner accross the developing/toner cylinder

I have a mfc-8440, 5 years old, low usage, 50% drum life, new toner cartridge. The problem is that the contrast of the printed copy does not change regardless of the setting using the path...

This is very easy to solve. Remove the drum and toner cartridge. Look into the machine where they sat. Now look up and you will see (a little aukward but its there) a glass plate the width of an A4 sheet of paper. Run your finger accross it. Look at your finger and will probably be dirty. This is the window the laser beam passes thru to hit the drum. When its dirty it does not allow enough ;light to the drum hence a weak beam and light printing.
simples?

Canon FC120 mono copier. First few copies are ok, then they get blured and out of focus? Any suggestions? Cheers

This sounds like a problem with the laser. Have you replaced the toner setup recently? Could be a bad cartridge. This model uses an all-in-one toner/drum.

If the toner cartridge is not the problem, try cleaning the laser bar (usually clear plastic about 2.5mm wide). There are two other possibilities (at least) but requires dis-assembly and electronic repair knowledge. There could be a mechanical problem with the optical copy assembly. This is unlikely due to the fact that the first few copies are OK. The other repairable problem could be power supply. Defective components (especially capacitors) can cause low power and may be affecting the power of the laser causing it to be out of focus.

I scored a laser printer with duplex because a couple of capacitors were bad.

These are very good machines so I would see no reason to replace it. Do you have the operators manual? If so look up the setting for "toner save mode" and make sure it is NOT turned on.
The drum unit is good for at least 18,000 pages so I would not suspect the drum. I even reset the counters on the drum units and can get up to 36,000 pages on them. Do you have the machine hooked to a PC for printing? If so is there any difference between printer density and copy density? If so then the issue is with the scanner density setting. If the copy and prints are both light then it is a print engine problem. If several toner cartridges are doing the same light print then I would suspect that your laser scanner optics are dirty. There is a narrow strip or slot just above the drum unit that the laser beam goes thru to write the image onto the drum. This should be cleaned and then the machine re-tested. If no improvement is see then the machine will have to be dis-assembled and cleaned which would require a compentant service technician.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

Light copies

You may have your machine set to print in "toner save" mode. Check your machine settings by printing a list. Also, some generic toner cartridges have too much polymer in the mix and will print light copies. If you change back to OEM toner, you may have to change the drum too, as the extra polymer stays in the drum unit and weakens the mix.

Panasonic DP-150PA Light Copies to no copies

Have you reseated the drum and toner?
It can be a drum cartridge problem. have you tried that?
You say copy or print, so I am asuming this is multifunction and you do both printing and copying.
1, Have you shook up the toner cartridge well.
After the drum and shaking the toner, I would suspect the transfer assembly, Off hand I cant remember of that machine has a transfer roller, or if there is a channel where there is a hair fine wire running through it.
The wire may have broken, or if its a roller making poor contact.
The laser is also possible. The transfer will be on the right had door assembly.
Take the cartridges out and see if there is anything laying loose in the machine,
what you are describing sounds more like a drum or transfer problem.
sounds very much like a defective transfer. And again, could easily be the drum.
Did you have a jam just before this occured? If you had a jam in particular in the right hand door, you broke the transfer wire.
Yeah, i am rambling huh?

Printing and copying almost blank pages

Ussally drum/toner would fix, will not be fuser, I would suspect Hi voltage board or laser unit, In australia these machines carry a 2 year return to base warranty.

Try reseting the drum counter, this also resets Bias voltage, might be your problem. open front cover with power on and press set, arrow to change drom and select yes.

Otherwise it would be a high voltage board problem, possibility alsoexist that it could be laser unit

Check status page for "71" errors, menu * 2 8 6 4 very very fast, machine will beep "maintence displays" then 77 to print out status page, 99 to return to normal.
