Question about Abit GD8 Motherboard

3 Answers

GD8 motherboard I have the GD8 motherboard with a Pentium IV processor. I also have a AMD Athlon 1800+, i have been advised that this processor is better than the P IV. Could you please advise if i can safely swap the original P IV for my AMD Athlon without causing any problems to the workings of the GD8 motherboard, and could you please confirm that the AMD is the better processor. Any help you can give me will be gratefully received. Mark

The Abit GD8 motherboard supports the Intel P4 and Intel Celeron D processors up to 800MHz front side bus. AMD Processors are physically incompatible with boards designed for Intel processors.

You should be able to upgrade to an Intel P4 or Celeron up to 2.0GHz, but you wont be able to put the Athlon 1800+ in the system.

Without knowing the speed of your P4, I cannot provide any benchmark or comparison details to the AMD 1800+.

The bad news is the AMD processor will not work on that motherboard according to the specifications listed here: www4.dealtime.com/xPF-Abit-MB-ABIT-GD8-INTEL-915P-ATX-RETAIL
I believe the AMD is just as good as the Intel Pentium but that is certainly a personal preference.

The GD8 mobo spec says that the bopard is only compatible with P4 and Celeron D processors so no you cant swap it! Generally the Athlon 1800+ is a better processor but it depends on the mobo, BIOS, RAM setup etc.

Your existing CPU will not work with that motherboard. The AM2+/AM2 processor slot is for AMD processors only. For this motherboard, you will need one of the following processors: Phenom FX / Phenom / Athlon 64 FX / Athlon 64 X2

Intel Pentium Dual Core and AMD Athlon 64 X2 processors

I'd advise don't start thinking below E2180. As per the performance go, E2180 and AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ are almost same but E2180 runs cooler. If you are going to use dedicated graphics card, go for E2180 and if you want a CPU for Integrated Graphics go for AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ because most of the 780G/790X chip-based AMD-compatible boards offer superior IGP.
Best wishes...

amd is better for online gaming and grafix, from my personal view they also can take more power, than a standard dual core intel proccessor so id advise you to go for Amd if its for online gaming

E2180 Vs Athlon 64 X2 5000+

depends on what you plan to do with the cpu amd are good but a 3200 may only run @ 1.8 to 3.2 ghz depending while a intel 3200 will run 3.2 ghz.
I believe intel are more stable & run cooler than AMD but AMD benchmarks on Games better but run hotter (so get a good cooling fan & heatsink both pentium / celeron d & intel dou / dual core / core 2 dou and amd x2 have 2 cores (but watch your front side bus and cache the higher the better but the more $ also) then You need a good stable mobo that supports the chip you get (I preffer asus & msi for Gamers and biostar / msi for home users)

So the Socket 478 pinned pentium is not suitable. Advise: Try to exchange it with a new laptop or buy a used laptop for suitabl configuration
