Well this really bugs u out installing Windows XP into a non XP system

All u need is a slip streamed driver for it..
Now dont be confused.. THE SETUP HAS DETECTED AN ERROR & WILL SHUT DOWN
This would be shown when u start installin xp..
Look, the hard disk is Sata & the mother board chip is something different..
The drivers called SATA Drivers required for hard disk to be detected while u prepare system to format..
u can install this drivers but u've to feed them in the setup CD itself...
The Process is Called SLIP STREAMING WINDOWS XP
I've done it.. its very simple but complicated.. i'll suggest u to start comupter with an vista installation disk, now after u start go with the setup.. when u r asked to select Drives, u'll see a tab named LOAD DRIVERS
Click it...
This will ask the drivers file (.inf) to be found..
U need Intel chipset
SATA RAID Controller u can follow the link

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=414

Now select (iastor-sata-drivers.zip ~201KB).

After u download it, save it to ur harddrive.. to a folder i'll say D:\Drivers

Now gettin back to windows setup, when u r asked to load drivers browse to d:\Drivers and select the displayed file

after it loads the driver, simply restart ur system & insert the windows xp disk..
Now it will ask somethin else, just continue with it..
Lets see whether it works or not...or u can follow the steps of how to create a Windows XP Slip Stream..

If it works please rate me up.. Thanks

You sure your HD isn't bad? You could try a low-level format and then try to install, I am assuming you don't mind loosing any data already on the disk.

Factory restore hp pavilion dv4000 without disks

Dear Costmer,
Power up the PC while holding the F11 key down hold the key down for 10 seconds, see if recovery manager starts, if it does not, you have 2 choices.
1. Use the product Key on the COA sticker and a XP OEM install disc to reinstall windows.
2. Order a set of recovery discs

Can windows XP be install on HP Pavilion dv7-1132nr with Vista OS

Yes, You can dual boot Windows XP and Vista but you'll be having problem finding drivers if you install Windows XP on this computer since Windows XP supported drivers aren't available on Hp download page. HP has only Windows Vista and Windows 7 drivers for this System.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

For the first one, you need to enter BIOS and set the HDD settings. Maybe you can automatic detect it once and then the system knew where to load system from. If it can see the hard disk and reads it but no operating system found, then you may need to check the operating system on your hard disk.
For the second one, I do think it is better to upgrade to a upper level OS such as Windows 7. While you have Vista you will have better deal with Windows 7. If you do have a agreement with Microsoft to have newer OS for free in a certain period, you can get Windows 7 for free. If you don't have that agreement, you can get Upgrade version of windows 7 with a huge discount if you have Vista.
You can actually back up your data to an wim file on vista and restore all the data and settings after the upgrading. But be sure to keep a full backup of your hard disk and everything just in case.
You can enter BIOS and make sure booting from CD first. Then there is a key you need to press very early in the booting process to launch the recovery. There is also a factory default restore you can use. Did you call HP to find out what the key is and how to use factory default restoration? You can always plug the hard disk to other computer to back up the data and then restore to factory default and put the data back.
