I have the same problem when with the distortion of the picture when playing tapes.I get the ATR message on the screan. Cleaning of the heads didn't solve the problem.

Try pressing the "through" button (as opposed to NTSC or PAL). I have had some problems trying to view a foreign video tape when selecting "NTSC" (thinking I had to select it, so that it would convert the output into the signal required by my NTSC TV).  You don't need to do this with this particular VCR. Your problem might be more complicated, but this riddled me for a long time.

Its because the head is worn out and you need a replacement of it. Clean the audio head and sound will be fine. Usually a good clean of both the heads will resolve the issue.

Sylvania dvd player will not play in color only

Make sure you have a NTSC player not PAL. A PAL player will only show video in black & white on a NTSC TV.

My dvd's play in black & white. cant get any color in pitures.

There are three types of display settings. 1 PAL, 2, NTSC and 3, Auto.

The pal and auto makes a display show color while the NTSC allow a display show in black and white but sometimes NTSC also shows color. It is possible that the display format on the movie is NTSC.

To fix this problem, play the movie that shows black and white. When the movie shows in black and white, press PAL/NTSC or P/N on the remote control and it should display in color.

Or Go to the player menu, check video or display setting, change it to Auto.

Problem should be fixed because that's where it lies....

But if it doesn't solve the problem, please let me know so that I may direct you further on what next to do.

I hope you understand the above.

Good luck.

We have a Philips Magnavox Model #TP3284C101 TV and plugged in a Durabrand DVD Model #DVD1002 player to it. It will only play in black and white on this TV. But when we plug the DVD player into another TV...

It sounds like you have a standard problem.
Is the TV you are using, that gives the black and white picture, the same as the other ie, both NTSC or PAL and both on RGB or Y-C or S-Video?
Check to see what is required and set the DVD player accordingly.
Hope that helps.

My dvd player is playing color dvd's in black and white.

It sounds to me as if you have the Video standard wrong, Check what your standard is either PAL, NTSC or SECAM and make sure you have correct one activated. Sounds like a PAL signal being played NTSC. or vice versa.

Plays movies in black and white? not in color!

it has something to do with your TV's video system and your player's video system...they should match...that is,PAL-PAL,NTSC-NTSC and etc..or if your tv has a multisystem then just set it to AUTO. Check on the dvd menu for the video format maybe that´s the problem , hope this helps , AJ

Only black and white

If you are playing different region dvds, they can be of different color formats also
(US = NTSC, Europe = PAL). If your television is not multi-format then non-compatible
DVDs will play black and white. The solution is to purchase a mutli-format TV (accepts
both PAL and NTSC formats)

DVD picture is black and white

Sounds like you are either trying to play an NTSC (US or Asian) DVD on a PAL (European) TV.

Go into the DVD settings and look for picture, video or display options.

If the DVD is set to NTSC, then set to PAL.

Playing movies in black and white

Use a scart lead to connect it to the TV, that should cure it.

Black & White picture

There can one of two problems here. Either your DVD player's output is set to NTSC and you are attempting to play it through a PAL (European) TV, or you are perhaps using the SVHS output incorrectly. The solution is to access the player's setup menu and ensure the video output is set to your standard (PAL or NTSC). Hope this helps!
