No power to hitachi drive even with "toaster-like" help

After I accidentally used to wrong adapter I removed the Hitachi 1 tb drive from the enclosure and put it in a Thermaltake by BlacX. It doesn't register as getting power. any thoughts? I assumed this would fix it. Does it sound like it can be recovered at all? It was a Simpletech case.
the model is HDT7210010SLA360.

thanks!

Hi Leslie,

The first advice I usually give with this type of damage is to try the drive in a new enclosure. When that doesn't work you can still usually recover the data but will most likely need the help of a pro to do so.

If the data on the drive is valuable and needs to be recovered then reply back with your Country, State and City and I wil recommend an appropriate profesional facility to assist you.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

You may want to remove the drive and place it into a PC with the correct interface SATA or IDE.

If the PC can read it then the issue is with the enclosure and not the drive.

I need to purchase a drive enclosure for a Hitachi hard drive. Model no. HTS541612J9SA00. I have bought 2 different models both were wrong. Help!

The drive you posted is a SATA I drive, that may be the reason the other enclosures did not work. Search for an enclosure that is SATA I compatible.

Here is one from Thermaltake:

hello, if the hdd is not being recognize by your Sony laptop, may be because the device is not responding any more, anyway this is still new you can have that Hitachi replace via the warranty, but your not suppose to tell them what happen cause that would fall for intentional damage. Just tell them it stop working. Thank you for using Fixya

Hitachi 250GB external drive not being recognized by desk top or laptop? Any suggestions?

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Hitachi Simple Drive mini 500 GB USB only ticking sound when plugged in. Eight months old, used sparingly. Any ideas?

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply (your "mini" device may not need one)

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Problem with Hitachi 1TB external hard drive

Most likely you just burnt up the adaptor. You can order another one from Hitachi.

The data is probably still intact on the drive itself.
You can connect it to your computer with an adapter that plugs into the drive itself and the usb port on your computer. It then shows up as a drive letter as normal.
You can buy these sata to usb adapters at most computer stores for around $25. Tiger has a nice selection:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/search.asp?keywords=sata%20to%20usb%20adapter

I would pick one with an external power supply. It also connects to your hd. The ends are keyed so you can't miss-plug them.

Or find a local computer tech (most have this cable in our toolkit) and he probably will copy your data in a few minutes for you.
