First, check all electrolytic capacitors and replace those which are blown or rounded. Next, if when it shuts down the green LED also turns off, then
on the controller PCB there's tiny transistor-like chip U406. Remove it from the board and try to turn the monitor on. That's reset circuit, you could live without it.

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed GATEWAY monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

My monitor turns itself on and off with no prompting

Go into the control panel and check the system settings. You might have it set to turn the monitor off after a low number of seconds of use. If you have it set for 30 seconds, if you don't use the keyboard or mouse for 30 seconds, the monitor will shut off. When you start to use it again, it will come back on.

HP TCO '03 MONITOR SHUTTING OFF

Did you check the sleep mode or power off mode? What do you do to make it come back on? Sounds like it might be getting too hot and/or going bad. Not sure how to diagnose this without seeing it myself. That is the best that I can do. Your video card could be going bad. Try another video card on that monitor. This will be the only way to decide if it is the card or monitor.
