Question about IBM ThinkPad R40 2681

2 Answers

I have an IBM ThinkPad. It starts to boot up then shuts down. Is this a power problem? Any thing that you can tell me will be very much appreciated. It is too old to put too much money into, but I can do a little with hardware. Thank you, Susan

    Hi,

I hear a click, not a beep, the IBM logo comes up then it just shuts down.

  • Susan Salinas Sep 09, 2009

By the way... This ThinkPad does not say that it is a R40. Only that it is a 2681-CTO S/N FX-V8575

I have an IBM ThinkPad Type: 2681-CTO S/N V8575 04/02 The battery has not worked for several months, only using the wall plug. When I turn it on I hear a click, no beeps, the IBM logo comes up for a split second then it shuts down.
I have one of your gurus working on this but I got an email saying I could come here.

All lights come on momentarily, then just the Z in a circle and the cylinder with the horizontal arrows. The plus battery light is still on.

You said "First when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios .
If you able to see your bios then there is not any isue with power supply."

I am not able to get into the bios.
"But if you can't see bios screen and it is shut down then you have to check your batter is works fine."

The battery has not worked for several months, I am using the power cord. I have tried diffrent outlets with the same results.

The battery led shows a plus sign and the pin where the plug goes is sturdy.

Would you be willing to guess as to what kind of hardware problem?

Thank you very much. I guess I will try a new lap top. Have a great day!

I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to get to your messages and now it seems I've been rejected.

    Hey

the computer turning off like that is clearly a hardware problem. I can't say without actually having the laptop and looking it over myself what the issue is, but its most likely a problem that will require replacement parts. You might want to consider a new laptop..

You can take it to a local tech maybe you can find someone who would look at it for free?

  • Ekse Sep 09, 2009

I can guess that its the mainboard thats not working properly here, the power supply is probably fine, unless , its a old powersupply and as the laptop turns on, the powersupply no longer supplies enough power, you could try the laptop with a new generic power adapter, just make sure the power voltage etc are the same values as in the bottom of the laptop or on the label of the old adapter.

  • Ekse Sep 09, 2009

Not having a battery in the laptop to back up the power adapter could be it, if its a old worn out adapter (internally) the load that the laptop gives it might be too much for it to handle and the powersupply voltage / output drops and the laptop can't stay turned on without the required voltage.

My IBM Thinkpad won't turn on after improper shutdown.

Two things have me confused. Improper shut down (how did it happen) and "it won't turn on", it won't power up or windows will not start up. Just a little more information and you'll probably be flooded with answers.

My IBM T42 thinkpad would not start all of a sudden. The battery and AC power supply seem to be working fine. But everytime I start the laptop, there is a blank screen..the hard drive icon also does not...

Whops that sounds like a Mother Board Issue Common to IBMs.

What happens when you try to reload the O.S ? I would imagine it still shuts down. If over heats the computer will still turn on but not stay on, will shut down when the sensor on the CPU detectes excessive heat > 75 degrees F .

The problem is somewhere in the Power Supply flip flop Circuit System on the Motherboard most likely but thats academic!

You really cannot "repair" them, only replace them and usually that does not pay; the board costing more than the Computer is worth and Installing it is really a "Factory" Operation.

My IBM Thinkpad T40 2723 will not boot up

The first thing to try is to unplug the power adapter from the computer then remove the battery. Then press down the power on button for a second or two. Put the battery back in and reconnect the power adapter and see if it boots.

I recently replace the fan in my IBM Thinkpad R52. Ever since, when using the power cord it suddenly shuts down after booting for about 10 seconds. But if I use the battery it boots fine.

I would open the case back up to make sure nothing else got moved around when you installed the new fan. If it was close to where power plugs into the laptop, you might have knocked something loose that could be either stopping the fan and causing heat to shut you down, or causing a short when the fan varies its speed.

My ibm laptop contionusly beeps and says power scource is battery, when i press esc, it boots normally and shuts down in about 15 mins to half an hour

Either:
A. Bad battery
Or
B Bad power supply.

Sounds like the battery isnt charging correctly , the beeping is warning you it is running out of power.

Take the battery out , and boot normally with the ac adapter.

Does it work?

If yes, Get new battery. about 70-90 dollars.

If no. Get new ac adapter. 20-40 dollars.

T23 Thinkpad turns off during boot after restart

My guess would be ;-
A power supply problem with the battery and/or power adapter
The most likely one.
The CPU is overheating and shutting down and if you wait a while and it will power it up again, it will then run for a while and shut down again.
This can be caused by a faulty fan (its not spinning and needs to be replaced) or the vents are clogged with dust (needs to be cleaned and you may need to remove the fan assembly to do this).

MY IBM T43 fails to boot

Take out the hard drive and see if the laptop still shuts down. If it doesn't then your hard drive might be the issue. You can also try reseating your memory.
