You are probably experiencing a defrost problem. if you the back wall of the freezer closely, you are like to discover frost buildup which stops the flow of cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator. In a "frost free" unit, the defrost heater comes on every 8-12 hours to remove the frost. if the defrost fails due to a bad defrost timer, or heater or thermostat, the refrigerator will malfunction and ultimately the freezer will too.
I am not sure you can solve the problem on your own wiothout the proper tools and familiarity with the equipment.
There could be a large list of things that cause the freezer to warm up from the temperature it was before. The most likely reason is you probably have a defrost problem. Defrost heater, defrost thermostat and the defrost control are all things that may have failed. If your model is not a frost free let me know. Look inside freezer for a layer of frost building on the rear wall. If your refrigerator is not defrosting it will be a short time before the fresh food compartment begins to warm. To extend the time your refrigerator and freezer can keep food safe defrost by placing a bucket of hot water inside the freezer and close the door. Please place food from freezer and fresh food compartment into another refrigerator or cold storage area. By keeping doors shut as much as possible the refrigerator and freezer will last up to a week this way before defrosting again, Sea Breeze
Really when the fridge frost very excessively there is less cold. You have to regularly set up defrost setting if your fridge has automatic defrost. Or your fridge has manual defrost then defrost it twice a week. To minimize excessive frost, set the temp control setting to just mid- position. Good luck.
The heat strip located under the evaporator is not working. When the defrost cycle goes on, the strip turns on, generates heat, and melts the frost that has accumulated on the evaporator. Ergo no frost.
If the strip does not work the frost builds up and ice is an insulator; it will keep the freezer from going down to the correct low temp. And since the freezer is not as cold, ditto for the fridge.
You will have to check the defrost timer to make sure it is turning if it is working properly and you are getting power to the defrost heating element below the freezer coil it should get hot if you have a 115volts or so to the element and it does not get hot then you have a bad element
If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow. You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model
