Question about Western Digital USB 2.0 External Enclosure + Hard Drive WD3200JB 320GB ATA133 7200RPM 8MB (NEWITEM31869181) Drive Case

Western Digital External USB 2.0 Drive sometimes won't connect

250 GB drive had been working okay. Now, sometimes when I try to access data it starts to spin up, clicks loudly 4-6 times, spins down. Repeats this cycle 3-4 times, usually eventually shows files in My Computer. Tried defragging and chkdsk, no errors found. Windows 2000 SP4, plugged into dedicated USB 2.0 card.

When they start clicking, try to copy the data to another drive -- quick! This drive is toast, head crash. It hasn't moved one millimeter since I bought it. So instead of serving as a backup drive, it has cost me all my backed-up data! A pox on WD. The IBM HD in my PC is 8 years old -- that's the one I wanted to back up -- and still okay.

Problems like these are usually because of the usb connections, if the usb connection isnt strong enough i.e getting enough power,

try it on another pc if you can see if the problem persists

1. Try to use a different USB Cable and test. 2. Open the external harddrive and replace the disk with a spare one or working one. Then test if it connects. a. If it does not connect then the problem is the electronic board of the external harddrive. Buy a Harddrive enclosure so as you could still use and retrieve your valuable data. Or slave the drive on your desktop computer and see if its connect. b. If it connects then you have a faulty harddrive. I hope you have a backup of what you have there.

How do i fix an I/O Device Error on External Hard Drive?? or is it need to be taken in?

You can disassemble the drive and connect it internally to a desktop computer. The hard drives inside of these external enclosures are identical to ones found in desktops or laptops. The drive should show up as another hard drive on your machine where you can get all of the data back.
The circuit board inside these drives that handles the data transfer through USB can get worn out and sometimes do go bad.
Disassembling the drive will destroy the enclosure usually.

you can try some data recovery software. You can see
http://www.asoftech.com/adr/
It tells the steps how to perform data recovery.

If above does not work, you may have to format the hard drive (use quick format), and then use above mentioned software to scan again the hard drive and recover your files.

Disassemble the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, and see if you can access the files.

Unit will not work

Dropping a hard drive is like a bomb going off for the drive. It is likely NG.You are not likely to retrieve data as there is probably no data to recover. The disc is probably scratched bad inside.

Western Digital 250 GB MyBook external HDD not responding

If you've tried removing the disk-drive from the casing, and attaching it as a "slave" drive in some desktop computer, and you still have the problem, then you have a _BIG_ problem. Search online for a professional (and not inexpensive!) "Data Recovery Service". They should be able to disassemble and repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to extract all your precious files, and copy the files to DVD-recordable media or to a brand-new disk-drive.

WD Caviar SE External Hard Drive not working

It's possible the drive died, but my first guess (especially because of the burning smell) would be that the circuitry that connects the drive to the USB port is bad. In my experience, the only time a hard drive will "burn" is when I hold a flame to it. Hard drives generally don't go bad in that manner.

My recommendation would be to take the drive out and visually inspect both it and the enclosure. You'll probably find some scorch marks on the circuit board. If so, I'd contact Western Digital (if the drive is newer) and they should replace it. WD is *very* good about backing their products.

Regardless, try the drive in another external drive reader (ask a friend or co-worker if they have one) and see if the drive still works. If you're not hearing any odd noises or "clanking", the drive's integrity is probably still okay.

Hope this helps - remember to rate :)

The light is supposed to be on, it indicates 2 things

1) When it is being accessed
2) The amount of data on it. The ring glows more when it is getting full.
