Wont turn on

I was using my canon powershot G7 and suddenly it turned itself off and wont turn back on. I have charged the battery and replaced it but it still refuses to turn on.
Does anyone have any solutions or reasons to why this might be happening?

Happened to me today. I took a few pictures, turned it off. It won't turn on. It's dead!

  • guykap Nov 26, 2008

same problem here, after only 21 months. camera shop said that repair would be at least 200 dollars.

  • Anonymous Dec 01, 2008

My battery ran out and the camera shut down but the lens was left in open position. Re-charging the battery and using the re-charged battery, did not bring the power back on the camera.

I've had my Canon G7 for 2 years. Use it yesterday morning & it worked fine, but in the evening it just wouldn't turn on. Neither of my charged batteries worked -- it still won't turn on. Tried a "reset" I read about online: take out batteries & memory card; hold power button for at least 10 sec., replace card & batteries and try again. Hasn't worked yet, although on that forum many people said it worked on other cameras. Hope someone can help -- I love this camera!

  • Anonymous Jan 27, 2009

Same problem here. I was on my holiday and the G7 refused to turn on. I pressed & hold the power button for 10secs, the lens came out and stayed in that position until now. I can see lots of people having same problem on this forum, has anyone found the fix yet?

  • mosske Feb 16, 2009

I have exactly the same problem with my G7. I am getting no response at all from it. Just prior, I took it out of its case and both LEDs next to the viewfinder were on. Has anyone else noticed this 'feature' ! ?

I have a Canon G7 and it suddenly did not turn. Does anyone have any suggestions besides what I have read

  • bjs1 Mar 03, 2009

I've only had this camera a few months - bought it used - and I have the same problem. I tried the solution one person mentioned of removing SD card & battery, etc but no luck. Does Canon have a policy on lemons? This sure sounds like a lemon kind of problem to me.

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2009

I have been carrying and using this camera for about a year now (I got it used), and one day it just wouldn't turn on. I'm not sure what to do, though if the reports of $165+ are correct I'm not sure if it's worth repairing.

I was taking pictures upstairs and i turned off the camera and put it
on the table, after 20 minutes i came back . But the camera didnt want
to start. I thought it was the battery so i went up and charged it to
the max, that calmed me down but when i tried it didnt want to "wake
up". It was like 1 week ago and since im 14 i dont know if i can afford
camera repair. And my dad is good at that stuff he opened the camera
but didn't find anything wrong. Seems like a lot of people had problems
with this, Canon must do something.

Same G7 problem - frozen - i.e. won't power up. Had little use and plently of care, now just an expensive paperweight! Thanks Canon.

  • Fernz Apr 05, 2009

Same problem here, seems like it is quite a common problem with G7's but nobody has found the cause as of yet.

My camera will power on half way in camera mode, but if I start it up in preview mode (holding power and preview button simultaneously) it will allow me to change settings and view stored images... which suggests that this is not a memory card or a battery issue.

I also can hear a screw rattling round inside somewhere, perhaps this a symptom of the problem?

    any ideas?

  • dddv Apr 05, 2009

I tried removing the menory card but the camera still will not operate. I have three batteries and have tried them all after charging. still will not operate.

  • laemperatriz May 01, 2009

My G7 just stopped working.  It simply won't come on, the battery is charged and doesn't seem affected by the presence/absence of the memory card.

  • amoopen May 11, 2009

Exactky the same things happened to me. It just stopped switching on and as others I thought it was a battery problem..now its just useless :(

I had the same problem - all of a sudden my G7 wouldn't turn on. I was at a loss and was resigned to a huge repair bill or simply replacing it, until today when I took out the SD card (sandisk 4gb) to use in another camera (Casio Exilim) - and the same thing happened with that one! It wouldn't power up at all - when earlier that day it was working fine with a different SD card. So obviously it was a faulty SD card. Once I'd put a different card into the G7 and put in a fresh battery, it started working again! I am so relieved. Hopefully this might help others.

It may be the SD memory card causing the problem. I just bought a G7. When I turned it on without an SD card, no problem. I put it my old cheap SD card and it wont turn on. I take out the memory card and battery, then insert the Canon SD card and battery and turn it on, no problem.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

SOURCE: Wont turn on

does the light blink at all on it.

Many canons have had this same exact problem and either the owners just purchased a new camera or sent it in for repairs to Canon and I don't know exactly what canon does with them but you can call them and see if they will tell you but I bet they will just tell you to send it in.

But you've probably got dirty terminals in your camera body, or battery (or BOTH)!
I've found that the best fix if this is it is to (CAREFULLY!) clean any build- up on the contact terminals between you cam and battery with and ordinary pencil eraser... Make sure you don't leave any eraser crumbs behind...

Many times, if the camera senses an intermittent power supply, it will shut down before it even powers up. I've found this to be the 'culprit' on several cameras I have worked on and repaired... but have never had to work on this canon camera

Let me know if this works or if you need any more help

It turned itself off and wont turn back on

Hello :

It seems that the batteries are dead [ can't be recharged anymore ] . You need to replace them with new batteries . If you are sure that the batteries are fine , then you may check the base where the batteries set . Maybe it's rusty or some isolation stuff on it . If it's clean , then I recommend you to get your Cam to the service .

good luck .

Did you recently purchase this model, or have you owned it for a while? Has this happened to you before or is this the first time you have experienced this issue?

I can tell you, as an Avid Nikon user..which isnt much different from Canon since they are huge competitors of each other..that this might be a defective battery. I'd recomend contacting the manufacturer or seeking on their website, if they list it, as I know nikon does, and see if there are a select serial number and manufacturer dates on a battery for your model. Nikon had this for their D50 and you might also want to make sure the same thing didnt happen to yours..chances are they might of shared the same OEM battery..

let me know how that goes. We can work on other steps as well...

G7 just dead. can't turn on power. check battery

These G7 powershot cameras sometimes get a short from a loose screw which often leaves the camera with no power. You'll want to have it fixed but with a place that knows of the problem and does the correction inside the camera so that it doesn't keep happening. The place that just does powershots and they do amazing work on these cameras is: www.camerasandparts.com They charge about half of what canon wants to fix this problem and the include the service and the correction to the screws inside so it won't keep happening. It's $89 for everything with them, a great deal and they do superb work on these cameras.

Camera wont turn on

If you bought the camera in January, it's still under warranty for a year. When you get home call 1-800-OK-CANON to arrange warranty repair. They're usually very good about it, and will try to make things right.

Canon g7 dead wont turn on My Canon G7 wont turn on. I have tried new battery without succes. Please help nlthomsen@hotmail.com

That's a loose screw issue inside the G7 and the G9 that is common. The best place I know to get help for that one would be camerasandparts.com They just specialize in the powershots and they are awesome if you need help with one of these. Best of luck, they have your exact G7 no power problem right there on their site. I hope that helps.

Canon Powershot G7 just wont turn on... for no reason I can tell.

Usually you can't hear the loose screws in these when they fall out and short out the camera, although many people will say you can. When you have no power on a G7 or a G9, it is most always that loose screw problem. The screws inside should be corrected at the time of the repair so the problem doesn't happen again later. The site that is great for help with the Canon Powershot Camera problems is: www.camerasandparts.com They are great with these and that is all they specialize in. I would see if they can help, they're amazing if you need a hand with the Powershots, plus they do that no power correction on all G7 and G9's they service which I like. Good luck with it

Cannon G7 need help

Hi
Had the same problem a few months ago. There was a high pitchedwhisltle and I think the screen said "lens fault.turn off camera" or something similar.Bought a G9 to replace as the 7 was out of guarantee but sent the 9 back to the e-bay reseller as it was obviously secondhand with grit around the lens ring and the viewfinder.Ebay never again!.So 3 months ago ago I tried the G7 again with a fresh charged battery before I consigned the camera to the loft.I noticed that each time i switched on the whistle and message was there but the lens extended slightly further each timeso I kept rebooting until the lens was fully extended.Turned the camera off and on again and everything was back to normal. It seems that this may be Canons protocol when a camera goes back. Its been absolutely fine until today. It wont boot up at all.I have tried 2 fresh charged batteries and its dead.Any ideas anyone?

Canon g7

This is a common no power problem on the G7 and the G9, camera most likely has loose screws inside. If you need to have one of these serviced, try this site: www.camerasandparts.com They just service the Canon Powershots exclusively and they are terrific for help with these. Even though many stores will tell you the camera can't be fixed or it will be too expensive, don't waste money on a new camera. The G7 is an amazing camera and for $89 that site fixes the problem, does the internal correction so the screws don't get loose again, they include the repair, parts, labor and shipping back all for $89 all in, a tough deal to beat and they do amazing work on these Canons. Good luck to those that have this problem, that site is terrific if you need to revive one of these cameras with this no power problem.

Powershot G7 Camera won't turn on.

Same issue happened on Saturday. Only difference was the lens cover didn't completely shut when I tried to turn it off. I turned it on then off again and the cover shut....but it wouldn't turn back on. I fully charged the battery, but nothing. Tried two different batteries.

I was going to take mine in today to Wolf Camera in CO where I bought it.

Note that the camera was fully cleaned and and a new lense added less than a month ago by Canon (through the warranty program through Wolf)

Thougths?
Did anyone get any feedback?
