Question about Amplifiers & Preamps

1 Answer

Owned NAD power amp for 15 years.

Just made loud cracking noise and stopped. I know little about this equipment but suspect accumulation of dust could be possible cause. Is age against it re fixing?

Sometimes you can find the faulty part by touching the parts inside the amp. Only touch the plastic parts not any metal parts! As it is on one channel you have a good channel to compare the bad. Often small transitors can become noisy so start with them!

NAD C326BEE amp problem. Connected to recommended Wharfdale speakers and NAD CD player and previously working fine for a year. Now red light flashing on amp and no sound when system is turned on.

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a root cause for ntermittent shutdown.

After about 15 minutes of gentle use my nad T760 makes a horrible & extremely loud roaring noise and has to be turned off immediately

This is caused by the breakdown of a transistor early in the amplication stages. If it can not be controlled at all by the volume control, that helps to narrow down the suspect transistor(s). This unit will require internal measurements with an oscilloscope to determine the exact source of hte noise. Unless you have access to this type of test equipment, this unit will need to see a servicer. I can try to locate the more probable parts, but I will need to know the exact model and serial number. There are differences in the circuitry depending upon the run/serial number.

Filter capacitors in the amplifier are breaking down when they warm-up. Thus the low frequency noise are passing through the circuit which the capacitors are suppose to filter. Open the unit and inspect for capacitors which are bulging from the top - fattening. Replace these capacitors. Or send it to a repair shop - the problem is permanent unless you replace the parts.

Power cuts out after 10 to 15 mins little fan has no power to so it is over heating

power cutting is common protection for amps if they are over heating.
dust maybe causing the cooler fan to stick try compressed air or vacuum cleaner in the fan grill to blow/**** out any dust that might be blocking.

suspect that cooller fan is defective and need replacement.

No power at all on NAD C370

User manual here

Read page nine for some simple troubleshooting tips and see if that helps.

It *could* be a fuse but given you've owned it for a while and NAD amps often have capacitor issues in the power supply, chances are it needs some serious work by a good tech. Contact NAD directly and see what they recommend.

It is most probably a dirty speaker protection relay. gently tap the relay(the one that engages shortly after turning the amp on) when the fault is occurring and see audio returns. This should ascertain the problem. Replace it if it is a sealed type, or if it has a "lid" you can get off, burnish the contacts with a white business card, and give it a spray with contact cleaner/lubricant. Good luck and a "fixYa" rating would be great for my profile :)

Pull bottom panel and get some canned air and spray around circuit board .May have a shorted capacitor to ground.Might have to use repair directory on this site.

NAD C340 has lost ability to switch between inputs

I have the same problem which started about a month ago and seems to be getting worse. I also noticed today, that 1 channel is significantly louder than the other - fault in the pre-amp stage, as feeding the power stage directly gives balanced, albeit extremely loud sound! Looking on eBay, I found someone else selling an amp with both problems. It would nice to think that NAD would acknowledge a design flaw, and fix for free, but my amp is 5 year old.
