Re: epson stylus c46
Please go to my website http://www.the-inkstore.co.uk . I have the latest version of SSC Service Utility to download directly onto your computer and instructions on how to use it, what to click on etc etc. Click any of the Epson links if you can't find it, everything you need to know will be there, including printer Firmware resetting which sorts out a multitude of problems.
The 'maintenance required' problem with Epson printers has absolutely nothing to do with which cartridges you are using, it is a built in page counter in your printer firmware, which has a different maximum amount for each Epson model. Don't listen to old wives tales and heresay, we are the experts and it's an Epson scam to cause a lot of people to pay for maintenance or throw their printers away. I haven't found a model that can't be reset with the latest version of SSC Serve or the manual reset on my site.
For Epson RX500 users there is also a manual reset on my site, as the SSC Serve software won't do it for you. When using the program & choosing your printer from the list, it may have a weird name with 'x' in the model number, this is because some configurations are for many models in a series. For example, the C46 will be listed as C4x as it is for the C42, C44 & C46 models.
I hope this helps all Epson users to overcome the Epson scam of page counting and locking out until you pay their dealers money for maintenance.
If you like what I've done for Epson users, please show your appreciation by spreading the word and perhaps buying your ink from my site.
Just had a very similar problem with my Epson and it was sorted by my local computer shop. Apparently, after a certain amount of printing (in my case it was a few years!) there is a counter which demands that you check the waste ink pad to see it's not completely choked with waste ink. If it's not, then you can reset the printer counter to carry on regardless. It seems quite easy to do but if you want to avoid the chance of getting covered in ink the Epson website has a map of local Epson repairers - my local one was very reasonable.

Flashing alternately mean waste pad full. Reset using SSC utility or Adjusment program/resetter. But, you must replace cartridge before. Turn off printer, unlock carriage lock (left side of carriage at parking position). Move carriage by hand to replacement position. Replace ink tank. Reset using the resetter.
Cek status monitor ? Service required / end life? Use SSC utility to reset wate ink counter.Menu protention counter. Show cuurent value for checking. If value exceeded maximum, reset protection counter. Or Clear counter overflow.
Check status monitor? Black ink not recognized or what? If not recognized, red light just on. But flashes? It's may ink nearly out (low level ink) or printer need service. Check it. using SSC utilty to resolve. Reset protection counter and clear counter overflow.
Basically your printer says that you need to replace the waste ink pads. If this happens for the first time to this printer you can just reset the counter using SSC Service Utility (http://www.ssclg.com/epson.shtml) or if it happened more than once you shoul first replace the ink pads and then reset the counter or the printer may overflow. That's it.
Under each printers there is a pad, a spunch that holds all the wasted ink. This pad is probably full. you should locate where the ink pad is and change it or clean it. By cleaning I mean getting rid of all the ink from the spunch. After cleaning or replacing the pad you shoul run a utility to reset the protection counter. I use to have a all in one epson printer and did the same. I use SSC Service utility. it helps to reset the counter. After that, if that is the problem, your printer should work again.
This means the printer is in some intermediate state such as head cleaning etc so that the SSC must wait until it's finished. The easiest way around this is to turn off your printer, reboot your computer then turn your printer back on again. Then run the ssc, set the printer to your model then select Protection Counter. Reset the protection counter, turn the printer off then on again, and it should now be OK. If you need help with using the ssc program, please post a comment to this effect.
If both lights are flashing, it means the Waste Ink Pads in your printer are saturated with ink and the waste ink ("protection") counter has exceeded its limit. The Waste Ink Pads should be replaced as soon as possible. You can overcome this problem temporarily by using the SSC utility - download from
and reset the Protection Counter. This will stop the lights flashing and restore normal operation.
However, remember that eventually ink will overflow from the waste ink area and make a dreadful mess, so you must change the waste ink pads before this happens. This requires the disassembly of the printer. A copy of the service manual is available from a number of sellers - just Google "Epson C46 Service Manual". You will often find them for sale very cheaply on E-Bay.
If you decide to have a go at replacing the ink pads yourself, report back and I will provide further help.
The most help I can offer is a link to a utility program
designed to reset most (if not all) parameters of a variety of Epson
printer models. You need to determine if said utility program will work
with your particular model. This utility is SSC Service Utility for
Epson Stylus Printers and may be downloaded from here. Additional information may be viewed here.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
