Is it throwing up a 'disk read' or 'no physical drive installed' error?

In most cases, a boot error in bios (the pre-installed program a computer uses prior to loading an operating system such as Windows, Linux or Mac OSX) usually points to:

- disconnected cables running from the board to the hard drive(s)
- malfunctioning ports (IDE ports especially)
- dead or dying hard drive(s)

Open the case (if you don't mind voiding a warranty that you may still have) and check the cables that run from your drive(s) to the board and from the power supply to the hard drive(s) to ensure that the cables are firmly attached at all ends.

If so, the best way to test a hard drive without spending at least $100.00 for diagnostics is to install it(or them) into another computer and boot. If that computer boots with your drive(s), the problem may be on the board or with the PSU (power supply unit). In either case, you'll probably be looking at anywhere between $100.00 and $200.00 to replace.

Before you do anything, though, there's a button battery attached to the board; remove that for about a half hour, reattach it then try to boot. Sometimes this can clear up boot issues.

If the hard drive has died, DO NOT dispose of it. Most people think that their data is lost in the death of a drive and that's not true. Take it to a professional 'computer guy' and have the data extracted and saved to a new drive. The cost should be around $100.00 for data recovery... no more than that unless a new drive is part of the deal.

How do I find the serial number of my dell studio 1735 laptop?

If you enter the service tag into the dell website, it will give you full details on the machine, but you may find the service tag is the serial number. Alternatively, press [F2] during boot, and look in the bios to find the serial number

Boot priority order

if you are wondering how to change the boot priority order, you need to get into the BIOS. To do this you need to restart your computer and during the first few seconds of boot up, before the logo for your computer comes up, you need to press one the of function keys. Depending on the make of your computer it can range from f2 to f8. If you look carefully, on the bottom of the screen during boot up it should say something like "for setup press f2" or something. Or you can google the make of your computer and BIOS to find out which key. Once there its just like a settings screen and there should be an options for boot priority. You can usually change it from hard drive to external or optical. Hope this helps.

You need to go inside BIOS to find out whats the boot sequence. To activate the BIOS Utility, press F2 during POST (when “Press <F2> to enter Setup” message is prompted on the bottom of screen).
Press F2 to enter setup. The default parameter of F12 Boot Menu is set to “disabled”. If you want to change boot device without entering BIOS Setup Utility, please set the parameter to “enabled”.

Would like to know how you access the setup menu or BIOS

I believe that you want to press the F2 button as soon as you turn it on, and keep pressing it until the BIOS setup screen comes up, If F2 doesn't work then try F10
