The easier way to restart your router is pressing the "Reset" button (it's a small hole with the label 'reset'). The router may not be defective. Perhaps is overheating - if so, keep it ventilated, indoors and allowing to have some circulating air.
If the router stops responding or 'hangs' maybe you are using a p2p sharing program that is freezing the router because the excessive traffic.
I may recommend you to check the user manual to see if there is a website where you can update your router to fix any possible failure that may be present.
