The remote control that came with the TV died, I bought a universal remote and it worked great until recently. Now the TV doesn't respond to the univ. remote...just had a blue screen. I began pushing the buttons on the screen, finally got a picture, but now the menu comes on and just keeps rolling through all the selections. Then it goes off for a couple minutes, everything seems normal, then it starts all over. What can I do? Can I replace the original remote?

Hello It will be very difficult to unlock RCA TVs without its orginal remote control handset. Anyway just try this, This is the actual proceedings to unlock the RCA TV with its original remote. If you fail to do this with your present universal remote control, just buy an new original one from RCA Authorised Service Center at tyour town, or just borrow it from any of your friends or relatives; just to unlock your set. After unlock, you can use the universal remote control. Just follow the proceedings given below. One amoung them must unlock your RCA TV.
Most RCA TV sets use a four digit code to control the v-chip. The code reset is different depending on the model. Try each number until you find the one that works for you.
Hold down the MENU button on the remote and VOLUME DOWN button on the TV it's self at the same time for at least 4 seconds. The set won't say so, but the lock will be unlocked
Hold down the 0 (zero) button on the remote and the VOLUME DOWN button on the TV itself at the same time for at least 4 seconds. The set won't say so, but the lock will be unlocked
Hold down the MENU button on the front of the TV and the TV button on the remote at the same time for at least 4 seconds. 4- Hold down GO BACK button on the remote and MENU button on the front of the TV at the same time for at least 4 seconds.
Hold down EJECT button on the front of the TV set and the MENU button on the remote at the same time for at least 4 seconds. Depending on the model, one of the methods should unlock the V-chip. Now, if desired, you can change the settings on the V-chip by going to the MENU and going to PARENTAL CONTROLS, or on some sets, going to MENU and then going to TV SETUP, then to V-CHIP SET. OK.
It is always more difficult to operate the menu features of a tv using the manual buttons on the tv. I recommend you unplug the ac cord of the tv from the wall for a day while you go out and buy a universal remote control. After plugging the tv back in and turning it on initially most television on screen prompts immediately direct you to the set up menu which includes setting the language.
Follow the instructions on the universal remote and program the remote to the tv using the power button on the remote to determine if you have reached the right code. It will then be possible to operate the menu features of the tv via the remote control and thus change the language back to english.
In order to get all the channels u have to have the original remote or a universal remote that has a menu button, an enter button, and directional pad (the directional pad cannot control the volume and channels it must be for navigating). push and hold the menu button, the menu will appear then disappear, once it disappears release the button and enter 9876 then press enter. a different menu will appear and it will b three black lines, one at the top of the screen, one in the middle and one at bottom. the middle line has 3 sections the first part is the item number the second part is the description and the last part is the on/off switch using either a 0 or 1. push down on the directional pad until u get to the 00 factory settings 0 and change the 0 to a 1 with the right button on the directional pad. then scroll up to 20 channel lock 0 (i think its 20, it may be like 22 but it is in the twenties for sure) and change the 0 to a 1. then go back down to the 00 factory settings and change the 1 back to 0 then turn the tv off. when u turn the tv back on it will either automatically ask u to auto tune or u will have to go to auto program to program the channels. there are like 80 different menu items, be sure not to mess with any other ones unless u know what ur doing, u could cause ur tv not to function properly or even be able to turn on.
this problem frustrated me greatly and im very happy to help whoever i can with the solution
Most universal or multi-brand remotes will control a TV's basic functions, but almost none will support advanced functions like menus. If the TV doesn't have a front panel menu button, the best solution is to buy a universal remote of the same brand as the TV. If you get a Zenith universal remote, it should have a menu button that will work with the TV.
HELLO. YES IT'S TRUE ALL TV MUST BE ON TO PROGRAM THEM.!!! AND ALL MOST SET THAT HAVE A CHILD LOCK ON THEM .!!! YOU MUST HAVE THE REMOTE FOR THAT SET.!!! TO MAKE IT BRING UP THE MENU DISPLAY.!!! I want to thank whomever suggested the following...it works. I had been trying for days. Here is the solution:
Turn off the cable box and hit the menu button on the universal remote. The screen with the closed caption selection appears. Scroll down to the line regarding subtitles and turn it off.
Yippie, I figured out a solution that worked!!! I have a univeral remote from comcast, on that remote near the bottom left is a small button that says (input) tv/vcr, press that one time and whala!! the tv video screen was gone, I had to manually change the channel from the tv channel button on the unit. once I changed the channel to 3, my universal remote worked... the button is the second one from the bottom left... I was on hold with sanyo for a long time and just kept trying on my own, so good luck!!!!
You have already diagnosed the problem, the remote receiver on the tv is bad,is rare but it happens but before you call for help try unpluging the tv from the wall for 10 minutes and then plug it back in and try it,sometimes this takes care of the problem,if that does not do it you will need the help of a servicer ,your remotes are working but the receiver is not processing the information. If you are familiar with tv service it should be easy to locate the receiver, sometimes is soldered to the chassis and sometimes is part of the push button assembly and conected to the chassis by wires,if is part of the push button is easier to replace,if you are not too familiar with tv service be safe and ask for help.
