I got a new air filter for mine today, plus cleaned out the metal fuel canister under the carburator and the little brass bolt and my mower started right up. I was having hte same problems getting my mower to run and stay running. Glad I checked this site!

Hi, it is possible that even if you changed gas, assuming water was in the tank as your original problem, that some stayed in the bottom. If you pump the primer while it fires up and it helps to keep it running, you still have some water.

Mike what i suggest you do is put a small amount of fuel into the block where the spark plug goes. If it doesn't fire after two pull change the plug. Also find the air filter and clean it.

Overfill oil

Did you turn the mower on end or over? If so change the air filter otherwise It sounds like the piston rings are worn out. Rings are cheep but unless its an expensive lawnmower I would just replace it.

Overfill oil

Sounds like the engine is tired. Blue smoke is oil burning. Hard starting is oil on the spark plugs and/or low compression. This also can be due to someone adding too much oil.
Sometimes, the carburetor Needle valve hangs u pa bit and the Crank case oil gets mixed with gas so now the oil level is high. Too much oil in a motor is bad too, that would cause theblue smoke too.

My 5 hp MTD mower keeps stalling after running for a couple minutes. I then prime it excessively and it will start back up and do the same again. I have cleaned the carb and replaced the priming needle,...

You probably have already done this, but I had a JD 111 rider awhile ago and did most of the things you have done with no success. Then I replaced the fuel line and "BINGO" it worked great after that. Seems the line had a weak spot and would **** closed when trying to start.

Good Luck

Purchased new 09 won't start after new fuel, carb cleaned don't think spark plug bad

Squirt a little gas in the carb, get a new plug in there, see if it will fire, make sure the blade is on, won't run without it. If it won't fire, squirt some gas in the piston itself and try it again. Narrow down the problem. Only so many things will make it not run. Any kill switches, safety switches on it? Check it out.

Mower starts after priming, then quits. new sparkplug, air filter etc. cleaned bowl still no luck. cleaned out orifices in bowl screw. nothing. Suggestions?

Evan though you cleaned the bowl, the float isn't "floating" correct in the bowl to raise the needle for gas to flow into the carb. The float and needle can be replaced. When you prime an engine the gas shoots straight to the carb. As when the engine is running the floating goes up and down to raise the needle for gas to flow.

Where to find the spark pug on my 21inch 139cc mtd ohv lawn mower

It should be under a rubber boot between the valve cover *(stamped OHV or OHC) and the muffler.

Good luck and be careful. Dont pull that boot when the engine is hot!
