Question about Televison & Video
Same problem as described above. Worked fine. Went to bed. woke up last Thursday (Sept 3 2009) to flashing orange/record power/blue light. Hit reset button. unplugged machine. no joy. left on vacation. Came back Monday. Came back from vacation to same flashing lights, reset, unplugged, called direct TV. Was on hold for quite a while. Finally got technical support. while talking, out of no where DVR started rebooting. Went through entire reboot cycle, did system test. All was well. Turned off TV/DVR and went to bed.
Woke up this morning to flashing lights. Went to work. Came home. Same routine, reset, unplug, no joy, called technical support. While talking to technical support, started re-booting by itself AGAIN. No ****! Ran system test. All's fine. I don't know if they are resetting something while they are talking to me or it was just a coincidence ...............
We'll see if it still works tomorrow............

You have already completed all the main steps to try this on your own. Your receiver is going to need internal repair. You can use our premium service for step by step instruction or you can contact a local repair service by using our Repair Service search engine on this site.

Unplug it from the power for about 30 minutes and then try again. If it still doesn't work I would call DirecTV and discuss getting it replaced.

Welcome to Fixya. It is more than likely that this is a result of a new bootstrap software package being downloaded to your reciever. If you do not allow it to fully complete then it will continue to retry and reboot everytime you turn the power on. Best suggestion would be to check the screen to see if it is updating and allowing it to completely finish. If that still does not correct the problem then you will need to contact Dish Network technical support and see if they can assist you over the phone. If they cannot correct the problem this way then they will dispatch a technician to your home to investigate and correct the problem. I hope this helps you to get your programming back on as soon as possible and thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you. Have a great day.

SOURCE: Directv DVR R15-500 problem
Same problem here -- blue power and amber record LEDs flashing on powerup.
Looked and sounded like a power supply problem, so I opened it up and noticed the bulging caps (C7, C8, C10).
Replaced with parts from RadioShack: C7 and C8 with 1000µF 35VDC, and C10 with a pair of caps in parallel: 1000µF and 220µF 35VDC...I had to enlarge the hole in the PCB with a 1/16" drill bit to get both sets of leads through (drill from the copper side, and be careful!).
All systems go.
