I am using a Samsung dvd/vhs machine - it is a dubbing device and is able to copy from dvd to vhs or vhs to dvd. It is hooked up to the tv and when I try to copy the vhs tape I get a message "unable to copy protected media" - The vhs tapes I am trying to copy are some store bought original copies (1975-1977)of some classic movies (Mary Poppins)

Where the little square hole is on tape, just place piece of scotch tape over it and your good to go. Make sure the tape is tight.

How are you hooking it up? From vcr video and audio jack outputs to dvd recorder?
Or from vcr outputs to tv inputs and tv outputs to dvd recorder?

If they are the type that was factory made with copyright protection, then you are unable to do this.

SOURCE: incorrect copy protection error on SVHS tapes

I would recommend obtaining a "stabilizer" box just to remove any possible Macrovision. You can usually pick these up in small electronics stores or Ebay. I have heard of this problem with Mini DV tape camera recordings as well.

Can i record old vhs movies to dvd or are they copyrights to them? Like Disney movies from vhs to dvd? Thank you

Old VHS tapes may have a copy protection in the video that will cause the video to go dark then to go bright making the copy no good. There are devices available that will remove this copy protection. The copy protection is called macro vision I believe.

Will this model record from the vhs tape to the dvd?

You don't state the manufacturer or model number in your question, thus we cannot answer. I will say that many do, but there is a caveat. If the the VHS tape is a commercially made movie, chances are it has copy protection on it. Most machines will sense this copy protection and will refuse to copy the protected VHS tape to DVD. This was done to prevent piracy. Home recorded tapes and non-protected tapes will usually work ok. Do not confuse write protection with copy protection however. Write protection is merely the tab on the tape that prevents re-recording of the tape. Copy protection is recorded right onto the tape itself and is read by the machine during playback.

Daewoo DVD-T "copy not possible - this media cannot be copied" when trying to copy from VHS (tape is not copy protected) to blank DVD-R and +R media. Same problem with all DVDs and VHS tapes

You can only copy non-commercial VHS tapes that you have recorded yourself to DVD. You can\'t make copies of most commercially made VHS movies due to copy-protection.

I cannot copy commercially recorded VHS tapes to DVD. Msg comes up saying it is COPY PROTECTED. Heard that if for personal use only I am permitted to copy tapes. Any way around this?

No,this can be done only copyright materials through the VHS box converter run through a computer with a programs call copy decoders programs.Than u can copy VHS copy protected matrials.Than u reburn it back to DVD disc.So this require alot of work, time and money so not worth it to copy commercially VHS tapes to DVD Disc.

VCR DVD Recorder not dubbing

I called the manufacturer and realized I was using the wrong type of recordable DVD disc to dub to. Non copy protected VHS tapes dub just fine as long as I'm using the proper disc.

Don't know your machine, but is it possible that it's seeing your source tape as write protected (missing tab) and so assuming it should not be copied to the DVD?

VHS backups on DVD

Your VCR will NOT copy any commercialy published tapes to DVD disks. There is a protection built in to every sync line of the video on the VCR tapes. This is known as MacroVision protection.

The machine that you bought has been designed to block anything with MacroVision, and anything with any other industry standard copy protections. The codes for this are permanently burned in to the main uPC of the machine.

The publishers of the tapes do not know who is copying for what purpose, and how many are being copied. Under copyright laws they have the right to to take whatever action necessary to protect all their publications.

Copying vhs to dvd

The write-protect tab on the cartridge is set to "PROTECT" or the disc is protected witht the "DVD Management" settings.
Some video tapes on the market(including rental videos) are copy-protected to prevent illegal reproductions. Copy-protected video tapes cannot be properly recorded.
You cannot use the copying function when the FUNCTIONS window, the Scheduled Recording List screen, etc. are displayed.
I hope this information can be of some help to you all. Ms Tanya 2/12/08 3:54AM CST.

Easy. Connect RCA lead from video/audio OUT on the VCR to video/audio IN on the DVD recorder. Set DVD recorder source to VIDEO then press play on the VCR and record on the DVD recorder.
