Mechanism is in need of major cleanning and lubrication. You might also consider replacing belts and rubber pulleys

SOURCE: My AKAI GX 636 records but can't hear anything on playback

Trace the wires from the head to the amp section. Put your finger on where they join (during playback) and see if you can get a buzz. If you can't on either channel, look for something that might be common to both channels. Either a switch, or a pre-amp IC, as being the cause of the fault.

Akai GX-77 isn't erasing the old music on a new recording. Can hear the old music on the new recording. Please help. Thanks

Akai or Sony- just problem with erasing head. Usually erasing head looks like black and smoller near reading head. Can be problem deeper inside 'Tape Decks'- wire, no signal to the head and etc.

Gx 635d-recording only on one channel

This is very common due to the cheap transistors they used as well as a possible bad electrolytic cap.

How can I remove the pinch wheel from akai gx260d

I am no expert in Akai units but the GX-635D I was working on had a screw off cap and then there was a nut that unscrewed to get the Pinch Roller off. That is all I can say as far as help- the cap should unscrew counter clock wise.

I have a akai gx -635d reel to reel tape player that has stop playing where can i get it fix near me in lafayette, ala 36862

Fuses blow when there's an overload. In your case it will be a transistor perhaps in the power supply that has shorted out. It should be easy to find with an Ohm meter as it will act like you have just touched the two probes together when it's placed on the terminals of a suspect transistor.

Have Akai GX 630 D Reel2Reel, left channel sounds dull.

THis problem could be due to heads not being clean, CLEAN, or tape head alignment needs checking. test playback with a tape you KNOW to play well on another machine...demagnetizing can also improve play and record performance. A damaged tape guide post could also be the problem but this is not likely. Lift up the hinged head cover and using a flashlight and a mirror ensure that all three heads are CLEAN and shiny...clean guide posts too. test play with a tape known to be good.

Akai gx-625 reel to reel tape deck has no sound

This could be a head fault? Another possibilty is the preamp stage. You will need to look for something that would take out both channels. Such as an IC.

Unable to record with Akai GX-77

Make sure the cassett you are using has safety tab intact. Clean the heads and tape drive roller. If unit has a record level control, make sure it is set correctly
