More than likely your fan needs to be replaced. These small form factor Dells are know for problems like this. Warning! Do NOT attempt to blow out the CPU fan with canned air, as this will likely lodge dust particles in the axis of the fan causing it to drag and become louder!

Dell Optiplex GX280 has very high processor fan noise.

Hi
Generally Dells run very quietly, so there are three possible problems here.
The first is that excessive noise can be caused by the fans having to run faster than usual to keep the temperature down. In this case you need to check and make sure that all the airways and interior of the computer are clean and clear of dust, which can build up in such a way as to seriously obstruct airflow. If this doesn't help there are normally at least 2 fans in the computer, one for the CPU chip and the other in the Power Supply. If it definitely one of these the only real way to cure it is to replace whichever is causing the problem.
You can download a very comprehensive manual for the GX280 here:
Product Support Dell US

by clicking on the "Users' Guide" link. This will download a pdf file which can be saved to your drive for future reference. The manual contains detailed instructions for these types of things, easily accessed by an interactive menu system.
Since this is quite an elderly system, you may find, that after pricing any replacements necessary to cure the noise, it makes more economic sense to put the cash towards a more up-to-date system.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

Restart it or get off of gamesites or things like, Minecraft, Call of Duty, Terraria, and others like those. If a game takes a little to load and after a while you can hear the fan getting louder you can do something else until the fan starts to slow down a bit.

Dell optiplex GX280 tower machine, pc reboot again and again, fan run so fast and make alot of sound, also power light blink red instead of green, i have changed rams but facing same problem, what sho

Hello here is the home page:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/ussoho1/Product/optiplex-gx280

I think you have some kind of a virus or malware on your system.

Install this program and make a full scan:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

You maybe have to start the pc in failsafe mode by pressing F8 while you reboot.

Install also a better FREE antivirus program:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201

Please uninstall any other antivirus programs before you install microsoft security essentials. Run a full scan when installed and updated. It`not great to have more than one anti virus program installed. Most antivirus programs have a background scanner running to protect you from virus vhile you surf on the internet open a file etc. With more than one antivirus program the pc`s performance will be decreased.

There are a lot of things that can cause a computer to shut down. This could also be the power supply.Try also to renew the thermal grease between the cpu and the fan but BE CAREFULL not to damage the cpu.
If you are unsuccessfull at resolving the problem visit a computer repair shop.

When you talk about checking memory, it's the physical RAM stick inside the computer. RAM does not have sectors like a hard disk drive. If it does happen to be bad I'd replace it with at least 1GB to 2GB. 512MB is really low.

Good luck

My Dell Computer Processor fan runs too fast continusly, it wont slow down, pls help me.

Your processor fan is designed to run in response to the temperature sensor thats on the motherboard. If it's running too fast, it's likely your processor is running too hot. Make sure the case has adequate ventilation and is clear of dust and debris.

My computers cooling fan keeps speeding up and slowing down is that a good thing or a bad thing

I'm assuming your desktop has an AMD processor?
AMD have a process called "quiet and cool" this basically speeds up the fan when the processor is under load and getting hot or slows it down when the processor isn't working as hard.

WHEN BOOTING UP THE SYSTEM JUST HANGS AND DOES NOT ADVANCE INTO WINDOWS

There are lots of factors why your systems hangs when booting. One is, you have low memory running with bigger files content. Second, you have enough disk for the system more than is required. Third, a system virus which will affect the processing of your command. Fourth you have a low processor.
When it happens, free some files that will cause the slow processing. If because you have a low processor and outdated one, and you have low memory card, you have to replace the two with a higher and updated hardwares.
Thanks.

Dell Laptop Studio 1535

hi marob,

perhaps cleaning the fan inlet with compressed air can remove some of the dust inside so that the fan can work properly, additionally you may remove the battery pack and let the machine rest on four sockets (one at each corner) to improve ventilation and to prevent overheating.

good luck
