Two things, you can reset the router and turn off the wierless security but you will need to reconfigure the rotuer to have internet.Second you can access the rotuer's setup page and get the wireless key there. You can ask you router manufacturer on how to access the router's setup page.

SOURCE: Connecting a netgear wireless router to a 2wire

Are the router addresses assigned on the same subnet?
many routers have a base address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 meaning all addresses 192.168.0.? are part of their network.

One problem can be that both routers can be using the same subnet -- not an issue if they are connected to different connection points (such as two different houses) on the internet. However when connected to each other in your house they are confused because they have the same two different networks with the same addresses. -- for slightly different reasons --

For those that want you to connect from one router to the wan of the other you need to assure the base addresses are in different subnets -- assuming the one connected to the internet is addressed as 192.169.0.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 his network as stated before is all addresses 192.168.0.?. Change the second router to a base address of say 192.168.2.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 his network is everything staring 192.168.2.? they are now different and it should work. On the wan side of the router you can assign a unique 192.168.0.? address not in the DHCP range of the first router or accept a dynamic IP address from the first router. The dynamic address is probably the easier and less problematic of the solutions.

For those wanting you to connect to a lan port and ignore the wan port they should also have asked you to turn off DHCP in the second router (where you do not use the wan port) and allow the first to do all the dynamic network address assignments. In this case you could have two DHCP servers on the network competing to assign possibly the same network addresses -- if they have overlapping ranges duplicate addresses could be assigned resulting in device connection issues for those with duplicate addresses. Even in this case you may need to assure the gateway addresses are unique on the network ie of both routers are addressed as 192.168.0.1 the second where the WAN is not used could become 192.168.0.2 (where that address is not in the active DHCP server's assignment range) or 192.168.2.0 (note the DHCP server had better be off or else the empty wan port 192.168.2.0 could become the "gateway" address of attached PCs and since there is no connection there will be no access to the internet.

I hope this helps

It is quite likely either solution could work if all the proper changes were made.

SOURCE: Can Not connect to NetGear MR814 v2 Router with Acer Extensa 4420

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Check physical connections.

a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet “i” LED on the front of the router should light up.
b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".

Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default.

To reset the router:

a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds.
b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

3. Configure the router.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a cable connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab.
b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Scroll down on the center page and look for the Router MAC Address section. Set it to Use computer MAC address and click on the Apply button.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings.
b. Select Yes for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Select Other on the Internet Service Provider drop down box.
d. Enter your ISP's username (username@ISPdomain) and password. Then, click on Apply.

4. Configure the wireless settings.

a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
b. Change the SSID to any unique name.
c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit".
e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number.

Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection.

f. Click Apply button to save the changes.
g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle.

5. Power cycle.

a. Power off the modem, router and computers.
b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking.
c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online.

If you have wireless computers, you can connect them wireless to the router. Kindly follow the instructions below:

6. Connect wireless computer to the router.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 1, please follow the steps below:

The signal from my router to my Samsung blu ray is not strong enough

There are several things you need to consider with wireless connection:
Distance - How far is the Netgear router from the Samsung Blu ray? Try changing the wireless channel on the Netgear router that can help boost the signal. Wireless Security- Have you enabled wireless security on the router? Is it WEP or WPA? Make sure that you input the wireless security key on the Blu Ray player and that you have setup wireless settings correctly.Number of wireless devices - Check the number of wireless devices(laptops, desktops, pda's, etc) connecting to the router as it also weakens the signal. And if wireless security is not enabled on your Netgear router, there's a chance that your neighbor might be connecting to your router via wireless.
You can also test how strong the signal is by placing a wireless laptop on the same location where the blu ray player is. If the laptop gets a weak signal as well, you can try placing the router closer to the blu ray player.

I need the security key to my existing wireless netgear router.

The Security Key is normally used for Wireless routers to protect your connection from any unauthorized use. As you have said that you do not have the Security key for your router with you, the best way to connect your ACER laptop to the Netgear router is by asking your Wireless service provider to reset the security key & freshly reentering the same on both of your HP & ACER laptops.

Check what is the wireless security set on the router by going to 192.168.0.1 on your browser. Check it under wireless settings.

I cant connect thru my netgear router model wgr614v7

If you hook your PC directly to the router using an Ethernet cable you don't need the key. You can log into the router and change the WEP Key to anything you want, but u have to be directly connected to the router not going through the wireless.
