Can ignition timing cause no spark?

no
spark will occur is the coil gets the pulse to work
if it has points , check from power across the points
check condenser for shorting out
ignition timing only determines when the plugs get the spark in relation to the piston position

I need to replace the spark plug wiring on my ST Series homelite weed eater but can find information on how to do it

You will not be able to do this as the wire is part of the coil which means a new coil
i have carried a repair but soldering a copper cable ht lead onto the existing wire, placing a bit of fuel hose over the joint and taping off with electrical tape
still working after 5 years

There is no spark coming from the distibutor cap but there is spark coming from the coil.

if you have spark coming from the end of the coil wire and none coming from the cap you need to replace the rotor bug.

No spark on homelite 330 chainsaw. wire on on\off switch broke. thought to be ground wire. attached to block, still no spark switch in either direction.

The switch grounds the coil and kills the spark. Make sure you dont have a rub through on the wire coming from the coil. Better yet disconnect the coil wire. If this works you will have spark but wont be able to shut it down. Verify good spark, then repair the wire.

Hope this helps, Matt

Hi, I have an XL-12 that I bought new in 1971. It runs great, lots of power I am not one to look for trouble, I am curious how I might determine if the saw has points and condenser ignition or solid...

I believe that this machine uses solid state ignition, but has two elements--one is a trigger/charger coil and the other is the ignition coil. Like you said, if it ain't broke---. Parts for this are spendy--hope it outlasts the engine.

You may need to use a jumper wire between the threaded part of the plug and the cooling fins. You don’t have to bend up the electrode. HTH
