Hey rowlypoly71,

Here's some things to try.

Remove the hard drive from the console, (while it's off of course), and then turn the console on without it. See if it freezes during gameplay.

There's a common issue with the 360's where the cache size (cache is just a fancy word for storage for data) gets too large, and the read/write speed between hard drive and dvd-rom gets too long, and causes the system to hang.

IF this is the case; where it doesn't freeze while the hard drive is out, you can do something simple to "clear the cache".

Turn the console back off, and put the hard drive back in.

Turn the 360 back on.

Locate the system section in the 360 dashboard.
select Memory, and then hard drive, and then press Y. (device options screen).

At this screen press these buttons in sequence:

X,X,left bumper, right bumper, X, X.

This brings up a maintenance screen. Press A for Yes.

Since you are playing a game, and there is no error message. I'm 86% sure this will solve your issue.

the other 14% that is unsure, is because it may in fact be a faulty system. If this advice doesn't help you out, I advise you to contact microsoft for further support. But you know what they'll do. They will surely have you send it in, and we all hate that. So I wish the best of luck with the issue.

Sounds like the the processor is over heating and its causing the system to shut down before it burned up the board. basicly your thermal paste between your processor and the heatsink isnt doing its job. there could be a crack on it might have just degraded over time.

this can cause the system to freeze or see things ont he screen. it needs to be repaired before more issues happen.

You may having bad T-CON board and possibly the main logic board. Try cooling the T-CON board with electronics freeze spray (you can get it at Radio Shack) to see if the problem goes away when the board cool down.

The screen has frozen and gone snowy, no red lights on the consol

Even though it is not showing the ring of death, it is in fact the ring of death.
The GPU is overheating and can be fixed the same way as the ring of death.
I suggest getting a repair kit from ebay, or other retailer. DO NOT try the towel fix, it will only further harm your unit.

SCREEN FREEZES, GOES SNOWY AND LOOKS LIKE MATRIX LINES AND NOISE GOING ON

This i have seen before and it tells me the machines is displaying the signs of lead free solder failure (85%sure). you could strip the machine down and replacing the x-clamps at the same time do the heatgun fix if you dont have access to an IR oven.
To me it will just get worse and will definately need the x-clamps replacing AND the solder re-seating.

hope that helps in some way

PS3 went from a "snowy" screen to a black screen. HELP PLEASE!!

hi..
Two or more things, first make sure you have your audio vidio cables correct

Yellow= Video
Red= Audio right
White Audio left

Also make sure that the tv matches the input your cables are connected into. I would make sure the restart the PS3 to make sure the video is good (after checking the tv input)

Sounds like a bad digital board to me. Not too hard to replace in those models but, you do have to write down a few settings before replacing it. These settings are available in the service menu. Any questions let me know tvtek@msn.com

Mono setting?

What channel is it and when they tune in that channel, is the picture nice and clear or is it grainy and snowy before the screen goes blue? On some sets, if the signal is weak, the picture will go blue. This is called Blue Screen and is there so you do not see very poor, grainy and snowy pictures. Some sets will have an option in the menu to turn the blue screen off.
