Question about M-Audio MXL 990/991 Recording Mic Duo and Audio Buddy Package Microphone

1 Answer

I recently bought the M-Audio MXL 990/991 package from Musician's Friend. My plan was to plug directly into my ancient Fostex MR-8 8-track. Unfortunately, I am not able to get sound out of both microphones. I've plugged directly into the 8-track before with other mics and have had no problems. Do I still need to use/buy a pre-amp to get sound, even from the 8-track? I would immensely appreciate and troubleshooting help or any advice on additional gear I need to purchase. Thanks Matt

Hello matt. It may be a case that a preamp will help. It will boost the level coming off a mic. The ART preamps have tubes, are inexpensive, AND some of them have a pretty useful compressor into the bargain.

I use the Presonus TubePre, and that has worked well. You can run it pretty clean, or you can drive the tube a little harder for a bit of tube compression/distortion.

If I was buying today, I'd be inclined to consider the Presonus AudioBox USB 2x2, which would be a brand new interface that should also function as a preamp. About $150, so more than the ART's, but might be a great all-in-one solution. It might also be economical, if your M-Audio piece isn't a good match for the equipment you have.

You've probably already done this, but it might be worthwhile to patiently work your way through your recording chain and see if there's anything set lower than normal, including outputs on the keyboard and the inputs to the Mac, including the main Audio preferences and the GarageBand Audio preferences... Check for pad switches on your equipment, anything that might be a simple fix...

You have a memory problem. If you are using a flash card for memory or a CD drive or perhaps you have configured an external drive, you need to free up some space. Try deleting tracks or songs you don't need anymore.

Each song is independent on a CompactFlash
without affecting other songs. You can give a desired song name for managing recorded songs
(see pages 23 and 91).
Recorded track data is stored in a song as mono WAV files.
The MR-8mkII can convert the two WAV files recorded on tracks 7 and 8 (L and R) to a stereo
WAV file (see page 115).
You can export the converted stereo WAV file to your USB-connected personal computer, and
use the file by a music software application or make an original audio CD on the computer using
a CD burn software application. You can also burn an audio CD by using an external CD-R/RW
drive connected via the [USB HOST] port of the MR-8mkII (see page 115 and 123)

User manual for the Fostex MR8HD digital multitracker can be freely downloaded here:
www.fostexinternational.com/public/fostex_download.php?f=mr8hd_owners_manual.pdf

It is intended to record tracks off of microphones or musical instruments, mix the tracks, and produce WAV or MP3 cuts or audio CD's.

Pages 21, 35, and 36 tell you how to make your first recording!

I have a Fostex MR-8 MKII 8-track recorder, and as soon as I turn it on it says 'card error' and 'illegal format'.My compact flashcard is 2GB Sandisk, how can I solve this problem?

First you can format the flashcard FAT-32 on your computer. If that does not help your card maybe broken or the brand is not supported. Than try to use another brand. Kingston and Transcend always make te best choice.

Compactflash reads error

You need to verify that your card is confirmed to work in the MR8 at this site:

It is OBVIOUS that your card is not acceptable because it is larger than 2GB.

My new fostex mr8hd-cd 8-track recorder is unresponsive at times in the middle of a function...what could be the problem?

Is it plugged into a power socket with an anti-surge & anti spike adaptor to stop the small power variances. Try that and if it's not that go to the Fostex website and ask them just in case there is a small problem with your machine which is a very nice one indeed.
Good Luck.
