Won't Turn On

Just another question regarding the Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop as I was having problems that after shutting down computer the disc drives (all) would still be whirring off and on even though shut down. Now computer doesn't turn on at all. there is a little green light that is on the motherboard and stays lit for a while even though I unplug the power cord. Is this still related to the power supply?

Thanks for all your replies.

No smell of burnt Caps. Computer did start when I put it back together but it didn't happen right away. I had no keyboard, mouse, monitor, network cable etc hooked up. Only had the power cord plugged in. It would do nothing when I pushed the power button numerous times. So, I just left it and had to attend to work. When I came back maybe 15 minutes later, the Green power was a steady color. Turned it off, put all the cables back and it started up first try. Then lately, would turn it off and the drives and fans would continue to intermittely turn on and off every 2 seconds. What are the main issues? Thanks for your help guys.

All computers do that, there is always some energy that lingers on the power supply after being unplugged.

Does the power supply make a weird screeching noise or even smell like something burned?

If you can open up your PC, can you notice something burnt? like the Capacitors for example, look for something like this:

Capacitors that no longer work either leak or swell.

If this is the case, have the motherboard replaced.

Yes, It shows the board is getting power (maybe not enough though)
Since I can not see your computer, run through this checklist from Dell, Let me know how you make out.

I would without seeing it that the PSU is bad.

Dimension 4600 dvd drive keeps opening

Try this first - open up the BIOS part of the system. To do this, shut the computer off; wait at least 10 seconds; turn the computer back on and then press F2 when the Dell logo appears. Press continually until the message Entering Setup appears. In the Boot Order section, remove the CD/DVD drive from the boot order by clicking on Disable from the drop-down menu. If this doesn't fix it, please resubmit your question

I can't boot up normal, safe mode, or to the cd-rom on my dell dimension 4600 desktop, i've set to boot to cd rom in bios, but still nothing

If you are trying to boot off an Windows Installation disc then you might have a problem. On some computer the CD-ROM drive won't be able to read the operating system disc.

The solution to this issue would be to put in a DVD drive and try to boot from that.

More details on the normal and safe mode boot attempts would be nice too. Are you getting a blue screen or is it just hanging up?

My dell dimension 4600 won't boot up and when you try to turn it off with the button it just starts back up.

It sounds like a back-up was started and now your system is trying to complete the task before it shuts down. You can turn it off by holding the power button down for 10 seconds. This will cause the power supply to shut down completely. You will lose any unsaved data and it may corrupt your back-up.

A coin-cell battery maintains computer configuration, date, and time information. The battery can last several years.

How to soft boot a dell 4600

I used the reset button on my last one whenever ctrl/alt/del failed to soft boot
my computer.

Here is what Dell Chat tells me to do if ctrl/alt/del doesn't work:

Turn off the system from the power button. Remove the plug to the
power supply from the back off the system tower. Then hold the power
button on the tower down for 10 secs ( with the power cord removed).
Reconnect the power cord and then restart the system. This time do a
normal shutdown.
