You need to make a separate connection from the earphone output of the Mac to an audio input on the Visio. The HDMI only carries the video from the Mac.

What cable is needed to stream Netflix to a Macbook?

If you want to use a TV as a secondary or mirrored monitor. All you would need is a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. Use the adapter to connect an HDMI cable between your computer and the TV. Once connected you will have an option to use it as a secondary or mirrored (exact copy of what is on your laptop) monitor. If you have one of the newer macbook pros you need a Mini Display port to HDMI adapter.

When I plug my lap top into my tv via hdmi cable I get a picture but I do not get any sound. I have a year old LG 52" LCD tv

My MacBook laptop and probably others do not output sound on its mini-DVI connector and thus not into the HDMI adaptor. I would have to use the wired sound output or the optical output--same hole--into the sound system. If you have a DVI-HDMI adaptor, then that is the problem, there is no sound wiring on the DVI side. Same for VGA, which does not have digital video only analog.

My sylvania monitor is say format not suppoted when i connect it to my mac

You did not specify Mac model nor connection cable. Let me make a stab at it. ED means this is a 480-line interlaced or progressive, not sure. So you will need to select 640x480 plain or stretched. This based on what my MacBook Early 2009 white allows. I assume you are using an HDMI or DVI connection from a mini-DVI (mine) or the newer mini-DisplayPort. (I bought an ~$10 adaptor from monoprice.) -Ken

Hi
It may just be possible that DVI signal does not convert to HDMI signal. So in theory this may not be possilbe for you to get a result with your present attempt. May i suggest connecting to the DVI port of the TV. i.e Mini Display to DVI.

When I connect HDMI from a Time Warner DVR to my Vizio thru a DVI/HDMI adapter, I get no sound. I can only get sound if I use Component input (RGB+ audio R&L). Is this a DVR issue or a Vizio issue?

Use the Time Warner remote and hit the settings button twice. Scroll down to "audio: digital out" and select HDMI. That solved it for me.

The only issue I have now is that I also have component sound outputs going from the cable box to a receiver. When I turn off the TV while the HDMI cable is hooked up to both the box and the tv the sound goes out to the receiver...

it sound like you did the right thing . The problem is the mac output for sound is bad or the TV input sound is bad.
try input a mp3 radio to the TV verify TV is working.
put an earphone to the mac to verify the mac out sound is working .
if both are working just tool around a little and you will get it. good luck

I have connected my macbook to my tv using mini

Later MacBook (Pro) use a mini-DVI connector that does not pass analog needed for composite or S-video. Was yours ever working? And most DVI connectors do not pass sound as seen by your cabling. You cannot detect display through RCA. You just set it in Sys Prefs :: Displays, try some other settings, although your seem right.
I have a white early-2009 MacBook and mini-DVI to HDMI adapter (monoprice <$10) and HDMI cable and have not connected the TOS-link for sound, yet--just slideshows at 1920x1080. You will get a much better picture digitally. -Ken

Connecting an LCD TV to a computer to use as TV and Comp. Monitor.

Im no expert on the subject, but I use my L37 for a monitor, and use just the vga adapter. It works good as a monitor, and both dvds and my hdtv wonder tuner card look great through the vga connection. They do make adapters for dvi to hdmi. Although, hdmi also carries sound, but you wont get that out of your dvi output from your card. So you might not have sound when using that connection, as your tv may not look to the headphone type jack used for sound imput from your computer when you select the hdmi source on it. If you have speakers already connected to your computer you may not care. Also if you have a 720 p Vizio, 1366x768 is the highest resolution you are going to get out of it anyway, if I'm not mistaken. I'm Not sure why you would need 2 connectios to the same monitor either. I posted 1 link below because they had several dvi to hdmi adapters. Hope that helps.
