I have exactly the same problem with my furnace. I get it lit with the button depressed, hold it down for at least sixty seconds, then as soon as I begin to release the button to turn it to on the light goes out. Am I doing something wrong?

Sounds like you have a blockage to the main jet and maybe to the pilot light. If you have a compressor just blow the jet and around the pilot light area out from the top and with a bit of luck it will clear it. If not you may need to remove the outer covering and find the pipe to the main jet and again using compressed air just blow it out. Usually not much goes wrong with these apart from blockages every now and then and most of the servicing places just blow them out with compressed air. Just make sure if you remove a pipe you tighten the pipe up properly when re-fitting it. Hope this helps.

Bryan

SOURCE: Pilot light won't stay lit

Try cleaning the thermal couple. Just remove the ash from around it. If that doesn't work you will have to change out the thermal couple.

SOURCE: The pilot light will not stay lit to light the heater.

The power pile (pilot generator) is defective. It produces a milivolt signal to ensure to keep the gas valve open. If it goes bad, the valve thinks the pilot is out, even when you are holding the button down, so when you release the button, it shuts the gas off to prevent excess gas buildup and a possible explosion.

The pilot light will only stay lit when you hold the pilot reset button in, as soon as you let the button out the pilot light goes out and the actual burners never come on. Any ideas?

Gas line is clogged if your pilot lite goes out - They got rid of pilot stoves because the pilot was always lit and using gas.

And without a lit pilot no way you can get the burner to ignite unless you use a match, assuming you have gas going to the burner!

How do I fix the pilot on a CFM Insta-Flame DV34 RN?

Typically, the thermo-couple reaches a certain temperature which sends a signal to the valve body telling it to allow the pilot to stay lit. The easy answer is to replace the thermo-couple. Or, you could just replace the entire pilot assembly to ensure all the parts are new.

When I press down and turn the know the pilot lights but as soon as you let up on the knob to turn it there is a click and the pilot light goes out.. This is on my Mr. Heater Big Buddy

When the pilot lights continue holding the button down for a full minute and then release. It should stay lit then to allow you to turn it to the on position. If the pilot will not stay lit after holding it for the full minute, then the thermocouple will need to be replaced.
Hope this helps.

Can't light a vulcan heritage gas heater, the pilot light lights, but as soon as I try to lift my finger off the button to ignite the heater, the pilot flame always goes off.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

What you are experiencing is the lack of a signal from the thermocouple to the gas valve. I.e. the thermocouple is not passing heat information at all. This is caused by either a defective thermocouple, a dirty mating area where the thermocouple connects to the gas valve or... an improperly positioned thermocouple that is not "in the flame" with the pilot lit.

  • First make sure the FIRE end of the thermocouple is in the flame when lit. (reposition if necessay)
  • Next disconnect the thermocouple by unscrewing the fitting on the top of the gas valve. (No gas will come out) Clean the metal mating area as best you can and then re-install the thermocouple. Just a good snug fit. Once you feel it come snug add 15 degrees of tightening motion with a wrench.
Attempt to light the pilot... wait 45 seconds to 1 minute while holding the pilot button down before letting it up. If it stays lit.... GOOD JOB. If it goes out the next step is to replace the thermocouple. If after replacing the thermocouple it does not stay lit the remedy is to replace the gas valve. There are no short cuts and the sequence of repairs is just as I stated in order.

You can remove your old thermocouple and walk in to almost any appliance parts supply or Plumbing and heating supply to purchase the correct thermocouple without a part number. They will match it up with yours.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly
