I called SCEA and all u have to do is go to Network Settings. Go all the way to the bottom and disable the media server connection this should work. If not call SCEA and they will help.

I had the same problem when I try to install this update, after the progress bar reached 60% it would display the error code 8002f1f9 and then shuts off. I tried it many times by turning on the system, but after it turns on it would go straight to installing the update and no other options were available. After much frustration, I decided to try something different. Some how I fixed it this way and it was really simple.
1. Press the power button from the back to turn it off.
2. Press the power button from the back to turn it back on.
3. Turn the system on by press the button in the front, hold it until it beeps twice.
4. Let the update install.

For me it was about to reach 100% and installed successfully this time.

Good luck everyone.

I had the same issue, plus I was having issues streaming video. Streaming kept being interrupted. To fix both these issues, get into your router settings (usually http://192.168.1.1/ or http://192.168.0.1/, but differs with your router). Disable UPNP.

Disabling UPNP fixed all my issues, updates run perfect and media streams perfectly.

My problem appeared to be caused by a corrupted firmware downloaded using a wireless internet connection.

Problem solved by downloading the firmware file from the Sony website using my PC and a wired internet connection. The firmware was then copied to a USB stick using the directory structure suggested by Sony in their FAQ. I then booted the PS3 with the USB stick attached and the update process found the uncorrupted firmware on the USB stick and completed the firmware update.

If you have problems with downloading the system update, then use the other method given in the system. You can download the update from your CPU off the playstation website. Place the file on a memory card or usb flash drive and plug it in the PS3. Choose to Update via Storage Media. Locate the file and install. I haven't tried it, but you might even be able to download it off the PS3 internet browser off the website!
As for updates for games, that's a totally different monster. I still have problems not completely downloading game updates. I contacted Sony, and only got a "Sorry for the Inconvenience" reply with a bunch of links for troubleshooting.

you can try it in the ps3 safe mode.
I tried it and it worked in one time!

1. go to the playstation website and download the newest firmware update.
2. put the file on the usb stick.
3. turn off the ps3 system by the standby button(not that button on the back of the ps3)
4.press the standby buttons and hold it untill the light become red after the two short (beep!) sounds:P
5. press the standby button again and release it when you hear two short (beep) sounds.
6.connect the controller with a usb cable and press the ps-button.
now you are in the safe mode.

7. in the safe mode are 6 options.
select the last one...system update.
you need to plug in your usb-stick and press start and select to start the system update.

This was my short tutorial.
sorry for my broken english:P
I hope it will work for you!

For me this error meant hardware failure. I tried taking out the hdd while updating and it didn't work, i tried the system restore and made no progress. I'm assuming my problem was getting the YLOD, I fixed that and then tried to update and then I found myself stuck in a cycle of installing the update. So after screwing around with it for many hours while it was updating I realized it was hopeless. So I tried the ps3 recovery menu, system restore thing, which deletes everything and starts you fresh, but it never restored, I left my ps3 on system restore for almost a week and no progress. So if your familiar with the YouTube "YLOD Fix PS3" video, apply the same thing here, the only difference is that instead of heating up just those two chips, heating the entire motherboard evenly worked for me and I used a hair dryer because I didn't want to spend too much money, it just takes a bit longer, but it fixed my problem, my ps3 works and is fully updated and i'm downloading stuff right now. If the restore doesn't work for you and your ps3 is out of warranty, before sending it to sony and paying, I'd try what I did.

Here is the problem. If you are using a wireless connection and keep getting a error about the server. All you have to do is good wired and it will work the first time. I think it has to do with the security on the routers. Hope this helped!

i had this problem and just reset my router and modem by unplugging them from the mains for 10 seconds. for some reason my internet provider seems to cause problems with my ps3 when it changes my IP address as it does from time to time but this seems to cure it.

ok, I never system updated my 80g ps3 since i purchased the $600 system in Dec ' 07; and now that i have high speed internet, the system update will only go to 8%,16%, and 20%, therfore i can not play online like it was intended for and supposevly so much more. I have already been on the phone with ps3 more than 10 long seperate occasions on troubleshooting; ps3 eventually told me to call my internet service provider to open certian ports. My provider simply told me if your ethernet cable is directly to the sytem and the internet works it should be downloading just fine; and it is not an internet problem wich makes since to me.

My error is 80029C77, and everytime I get to 80% of the 2.60v Firmware, it generates that very same error.
I have tried everything SONY support has offered up, from the ridiculous to the down right impossible. (yes Flash drive, yes Media Server disable) They have ZERO idea what that error number means, mostly because they read from a script. Translation is, SCEA support is useless for REAL problems, just good for user error.
I am sending in my PS3 at the out of warranty cost of $150, to "fix" my PS3 that can't install the 2.60v firmware. Their firmware is a pre-requisite for getting online, so my PS3 works fine playing games and watching movies, I just can't get online.

I have almost all of your problems combined into one..

But this main problem that i have, which is similar to yours..
I go to <Network Settings> and into <System Update>
Yes i go through all that Agreements and all that, i accept.
!-Problem Starts... it stays at 0% and doesnt even look like its doing anything, i waited about 45 minutes, i couldnt take it anymore and since it was 4:00am i thought i should of taken a 2 hour or so sleep. I wake up, I saw that my ps3s light thing (The green light that appears when your turn the ps3 on...) was off, so I was thinking, YES! it finished; because i ticked a box which said - Turn off the system automatically once finished update.
so, i turned it back on,( i completely forgot lol, sorry ) but the last thing i remember is that it said something about an error, and about a bunch of numbers, alot like some of u who posted on here............... I seriously need help, ive bought 2 games that i've admired for a while now, Army of two and GTA4. Plus, the main reason i even bought a ps3 is so i can go online and play with others around the whole entire world. and now the ps3 and its figurely typical errors occur? I'm not even a teenager yet, i cant possibly sort out all these bugs myself...which is why.......HELP us, whoever has answers with a solution to this,

EDIT: Currently turned off media player thing - (Waiting for the changes) <"i pray to god that this works"> i

yes i cant get the system update to fully load up because an error always pops up

Comment by OldSnake123, posted on Jun 22, 2008

i had that before . so i waited like a week or two and then i did the update it worked perfectly.

now i ahve the same problem with the PS3 updarte v.2.36 it stops always at 60/61%. so i was angry and tried to use usb cable to do the update, but it still keeps stopping at 60/61% and it says (The file is corrupted)

I'm trying to install ps3. I have a Belkin wireless G Router. I go into system update the download starts and gets to about 40%. "A connection to the server cannot be established (80710092). I am not at all technical and have no idea what to do next.

I had the same problem when trying to do a system update for my PS3 and for MLB 08: The Show. I found elsewhere that opening up the following ports helps. It did, but I still see that 80710723 error when trying to get the updates for my game.

BTW..the ports are:

TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223
UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658

When loading the Motorstorm that comes with the 80gig it says I need the update to play the game.  It copies the update to the hard drive and then attempts to update but says there is an error and to restart.  I've retarted a number of times and nothing, same error message, same lockup whan you hit "O".  I am bringing it back to exchange.
