Pa-19 power supply for my Dell m1730 is broken

My power supply for my Dell M1730 suddenly stopped working today. The small blue light on my power supply is going on anymore and it is not sending any power through to my laptop. Unfortunately my laptop ran out of power before I found out what happened. A few days ago it wouldn't turn on but after shaking it a bit it started working again, I tried that again today and it didn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Check the power adapter with a multi-meter, the voltage of the power plug that plugs into the power socket on the laptop should be slight higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the adapter.
If it is faulty, there are replacement power supplies available on the Internet or at your friendly computer shop.
If the adapter is OK then the power socket on the laptop is faulty or this socket has a dry solder joint connection on the motherboard.
You can test this by wriggling the power plug when it is connected to the laptop, if the charge LED flickers and if you hold this plug in a certain position the charge LED stays on without flickering, then the power socket is faulty.
This can be repaired, but requires the laptop to be completely
disassembled. I suggest you get a quote first.

The ac power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined . the battery may not charge.

There are at least four possible causes for this error - (error 3600-0749, right?).

First one: the adapter is faulty. You would need a tester to determine whether the adapter is indeed supplying power. Dell will send you a replacement adapter if the warranty is still good, or you can find one online (model PA-19 PN402, 230W).

Second: one of the DC jack solder points on the motherboard cracked. You may see the error disappear by "wiggling" delicately the jack in the notebook. You either need to call Dell tech support and have the MB replaced for free (if under warranty), at cost - in excess of EUR 400 - or the jack may be resoldered, which will void the warranty and requires experience in disassembling and reassembling the laptop.

Third: motherboard is otherwise damaged (voltage regulators, buffers, and so on). Diagnostics must be performed by a Dell technician; replacement policy as above.

Fourth: you may have problems with the BIOS (if it is a brand new unit), solvable by upgrading - Dell will suggest this avenue first if you call tech support, anyway, so check you've got up-to-date BIOS and drivers.

Bad motherboard for M1730

With the Dell laptops, if it were a broken power jack you would know by looking. It would show signs of missing/broken solder around the solder points. You could do a continuity test with a Volt/Ohm meter. However this would be tough with the barrel plug dell uses.

Now as far as getting someone to repair it for you. Iwould recommend a guy I use in florida. I originally found out about him on Ebay, he does a great job repairing motherboard issue (on the component level). He has ALL the proper equipment to ddo this. I have provided a link to his Ebay contact page. Send him an email, I am sure he can fix ya up.

Power issues

Dell laptops use proprietary power supply adapters. Inside the adapter there is a communication device telling the laptop the power supply is a genuine dell product. Which in turn allows the battery to charge. Anyways it appears that your charger is having problems. You should probably try to locate one local (from friend or computer repair shop) to test. if you try a good one with no problems, then just get on Ebay and get you a genuine dell charger. they are about 40-60 dollars. Or try calling dell.

If trying a known good charger doesn't correct the issue, you could have broken solder pins on the power jack inside the laptop.

If this helps you solve you issue please rate my solution.
